What would you do?

Your teammate with the same title and pay as you is at your desk all the time for help. I'm definitely open to helping - but sometimes "help" is basically the whole job - it feels like I'm doing both jobs lol and it almost feels unfair that we both get paid the same or very close (Colorado, so pay transparency). The teammate has been with the company for longer than me.

Try asking your colleague to tell you what she THINKS is the right answer/approach so she has to work it out. Might be a confidence issue and she just want reassurance? There’s nothing wrong with helping a colleague. But don’t do their work for them! Just provide counsel.

like

I second this. When I feel the team is asking me for answers I ask “how would you handle it?” Or “ I want to hear your thoughts first” I do follow up with “even if you’re wrong that’s why I’m here”. I feel like this helps them understand the “why” behind what they are doing and really begins to enforce boundaries. Plus they begin to understand, oh shoot I gotta think about this process first before coming for help.

like

That's the crazy thing about transparency lollll.

I recently got a job where I earned 10k more than the 3yr senior and I asked for help for the first 5 months Becuase I had no clue. Same title but different industry.

Anyway maybe your help has to be more questions based to make them think about things or just instructions on how to do something make them find ways to check their own work. There ain't no f way I'm doing 2 jobs

I provide them with the information they need, but would not do the work for them. E.g - here us the link you need, here us the contact you need to connect with, etc. Be helpful - not enabling.

I tend to say "you try this problem and if you get stuck, you can come to me" etc.

Yep - I would just offer up a suggestion & say "I'm so busy so I can't take more on, sorry, maybe you can ask someone else?"

Just because my teammate has the same title and pay as me doesn’t mean diddly. They could’ve just gotten the job last week. Just because they’ve been with the company longer doesn’t mean they know the role. However if they have been in the role over a year then you have a legit case and you should coach gently but firmly. If they’ve been in the role less than six months they don’t know their head from their elbow, give them guidance and help them out. Unless you want your team to look bad and fail.

like

Sounds like me and my "manager." I don't even like to ask them for help anymore because I have to coach them through the entire thing, and review it before they send it on. However, that's what happens when leadership takes the cheap approach and just wants a butt in a chair.

likefunny

Yes and there are very many “managers” who have no idea what you do. Maybe some of the questions are trying to understand that and they may be asking the same questions of you and your peers. Sometimes to me it feels like micromanaging. My thought is if you don’t trust me then why am I here?

like

I would recommend continuing to help but scale back how responsive you are. that is, when they come and ask for help, say "I can help but I need to finish a few things first - I have 15 min at (some time that's in a few hours) ". this makes using you as a resource not the most convenient option and hopefully they realize that they can actually do their job on their own rather than coming to you for everything

this does assume that what you're helping with is not minor things like "who do I contact for XYZ" but actual work

hope this helps! good luck

Set your boundaries going forward. It’s great that you want to help but it sounds like you are being taken advantage of. If they continue to ask for help after you’ve declined then take it up with your manager. But don’t escalate until you’ve set your boundaries.

I am curious what is it someone who is more tenured versus you cent solve. Share the right approach and let them figure it out, kindness is the most misused trait nowadays. Stand your grounds, tell them what it is and as it is professionally. Eventually this will seep into your responsibilities and you don’t want your work affected cause you are supporting someone’s lazy selfish ass.

Sometimes you have to let the weak play their part

Yikes. You should get his salary instead. You're basically doing his job for him.

HR from old job wants to reach out to me about something I mentioned in my exit interview. Why would HR want to reach out to me when I’m no longer employed? Been at my new company for a month now. I left bc my old boss was not good. I dealt with HR in past about the issues with my boss & team for months but of course HR was no help resolving the issue. Should I tell HR to shove it & don’t contact me again? I said what needed to be said. I’m very happy in my new job btw.
