What would you take over an increase in pay? How about better/cheaper health insurance, student loan forgiveness, or a downpayment for a house?

I would absolutely take better health insurance or student loan forgiveness over a salary increase. I just completed my Master’s degree, and I will be paying my student loans for the next 15 years, at a minimum!

I prefer cash in hand. My original thought was better retirement plan, but frankly I trust myself more than the state. All of these options benefit some not all. A raise would provide everyone equally.

like

true! I don't even count on having a retirement/pension from school anymore. I would take the downpayment though! nothing like owning a piece of real estate.

I would take smaller class sizes, less time spent on testing. I would also like to see all of the students responsible for their own actions.

A good down payment on a house would help keep people around

and it will help the economy and help people save and invest for their futures! so many young people are not buying homes anymore!

There are programs in many states that provide financial assistance (grants) for teachers to get downpayments for homes. I did this in DC and it was the best financial decision i ever made (i sold my condo in 6 years and paid off my student loans!)

Have you looked into student loan forgiveness? If you work at a Title 1/ Federally Funded school, you can qualify for loan forgiveness, based upon what you teach. Elementary teachers receive forgiveness of $5,000; whereas Special Education or certified in a specific subject, you can receive up to $17,000. Look your school up on the list to see if you might be eligible. https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation

Non-accounting rant…Our lease is up at the end of April and we recently got our new lease contract. All of a sudden, the leasing company is requiring renter’s insurance. It’s apparently a new requirement for all new and current residents. It’s definitely a good thing to have, but isn’t there some sort of requirement for landlords to communicate big changes to leases in advance and not just stick it on the lease and hope everyone reads it? It seems kinda predatory and sneaky.

How much does your household spend a month?... We spend about 5k to 6k all in all (daycare for 1 child, rent, insurance, no car payment, takeout etc), is that too much? I’m starting to feel guilty as 80% of spending is made by me (in house stuff, kids stuff, not in like designer shoes - but maybe a couple shirts from J crew) and 15% is take out because I don’t know how to cook nor I’m a bit interested. Husband lets me be about the spending but I know it’s bothering him :/

Is it a bad look as a senior associate (on the path to manager within a year) to be driving an expensive car like a C7 or C8 corvette that is $70k+? I don’t think it is and here’s my rationale. I’m making over 6 figures, maxing out my 401k and IRA accounts with extra $ going to a brokerage account, I have a 3BR 1300 sq foot home with finished basement and garage for $170k. My two loans are only $240k combined. Heck most people spend more on a house alone. Work remote so vette isn’t daily driver.

Would love to hear from moms whose babies went to daycare / school right after maternity leave (no nanny etc). Due in March and on the list for a stellar Montessori daycare / preschool near us to start in August (school year) when baby is 4-5 months old. Feeling guilty and struggling to decide if keeping baby home a year with a nanny is better, starting school in 2023? However, I’m worried about cost - we really would not be able to afford a nanny in our city on our salaries. Advice welcome!

For those of you in the technical recruiting space, how did you first get started? I've been in HR for nearly 6 years, and recruitment for 3. Job postings for this kind of work are intimidating since everyone seems to want 2-3 yrs of experience already.

Our district does not give sick days if a teacher has Covid so if a teacher tests positive, that teacher must use his or her own sick days. If a teacher gets Covid or tests positive, 10+ sick days are gone because of district policy. Some teachers have lost 20-30 days because they tested positive 2-3 times even though they have no symptoms. Because of this, some teachers have stated they will not test and will just come to school unless their symptoms are too severe.
