What’re some interesting practice areas where it does not make economic sense for big law firms to do work in that space. For instance, municipal law and legal services to small governmental entities. What else?

Many areas: Personal injury, workers comp, small time contract/business disputes (and increasingly any kind of litigation besides high stakes stuff), trusts & estates, most labor & employment, copyright/trademark/patent counseling... some of these moreso than others.

Patent prosecution is typically at midsize and small firms. It's really tough to make the numbers work in biglaw, and there is no reason to have a fancy office or prime location.

Commercial leasing. Very few landlords or large tenants (think Starbucks or McDs) use biglaw firms for leasing. The rates are too high and the deals don’t work with 3-4 people staffed on them. There are a few exceptions but much of this work is done in house, by boutiques or by solos.

My full time job (not SMU) is literally making me sick-spent time at the ER. One associate quit and another is out of full paid parental leave (must be nice, I’m not paid for doing double the work)…so I’m now expected to do the work of 3 associates. My supervisor isn’t exactly understanding, and I don’t know what to do. I’ve been searching for jobs, but it’s difficult since my background is diverse and not focused on one area of law. If I quit, how hard is it to find a new job?

Anyone have any advice on how to make the transition easier?

I do UHNW luxury good transactions. About a year ago we represented buyer and seller on a deal. Deal fell apart because the buyer was shady and actively trying to engage in illegal acts. Buyer reached out asking us to represent them in a new purchase attempt, we declined.

They found new counsel and made an offer on the same asset. The owner doesn’t wish to engage with them. Can I give the owners reasons to the new counsel without violating duty to my old client

I’m representing a PR in a probate case where an heir is being represented by counsel whose conduct has demonstrated a concerning lack of professionalism. This attorney has missed two deadlines each by several months, used arguments that showed a shocking lack of competence in this area of law, and has even misrepresented the location of estate property. I’m reluctant do it because I would hate have it done to me, but when would it be acceptable to make a report to the bar about this?
