Know a few people who recently joined / formerly were in their SF office. From what I gathered, your experience there can differ by office and group. For example, the healthcare team in SF is known to be sweaty.
Comp is usually very good / above street. In my prior life, I worked with LPs doing fund commitments and TPG is still seen as a top brand with solid performance. Issue with the IPO in my mind though is that the firm will aim to gather more assets to match up with publicly traded buyout competitors (e.g., BX, Apollo). Public markets tends to equate AUM with a “high quality” private equity business but that’s not always true. Generating 10x MOIC on a 500M fund is far easier to do than on a 5B fund for example. That’s simplifying it but hopefully gets my thoughts across.
That said, if you are looking to join a firm with top tier brand, larger associate class, good training, wider network, and strong MBA connections, TPG is a strong one for sure.
