I’m not from Chicago, but I’ve done some freelance there. I really think ACDs there should try to push for $1k/day if they can swing it. It’s a larger market but and the rates seem to be FAR below the coasts. I would try not to go below $800, unless I was desperate.
It depends on the agency and how tough the gig is. For example, Havas pays bank for freelancers on their Citi DM account. As a FL ACD I was making $800/day to write emails and DM letters. The trick is finding the sweet spot of maxing your day rate at a level where you are kept for more than 6mo. I knew a CD who was only making 600 but had been there for over a year. At 800 they kept me for four months.
@CD1 is correct. I’m from Chicago and worked as an freelance ACD there. Chicago is not a big market like New York, and they pay very low. I’d say $600 a Day is already the high end. Creativity isn’t worth a lot in Chicago I suppose.
$700/day
I suppose we all speak about the experiences we’ve had. That doesn’t make the answer right or wrong, just based on experience. I haven’t worked a ton in Chicago, but the few times I have, I’ve asked for rates between $800-$1k and have gotten them. Obviously your mileage may vary. Also, note that while I’ve worked at some decent shops on big brands, I have no lions or pencils. So it’s not like I’m special or something.
If I’ve just been lucky and the norm rate us $500-$600 then there is something seriously wrong with the freelance market there. I’ve freelanced in much smaller markets (Austin for example) with a $750 rate, and that was like 6 years ago.
What agencies in Chicago today are paying ACDs 800-1000/day?
@cd1 you're getting low balled. everyone I know here is telling me don't go under $700 and to shoot for $800.
Some agencies in Chicago pay freelance by a weekly rate instead of a day rate. So if you don’t have to work weekends, you’ll feel better about your day rate

What's a good/common weekly rate?
4k including weekend is less than 800/day. Even if it's not too much weekend I feel like I wouldn't go below $5k weekly.
