Get a manufacturer certified pre-owned car from the dealership.
Pwc2 - you are kind of right about the CPO cars. You do get the assurance that the car will come with a warranty of some sort. But you can always buy a used car much cheaper thru a private transaction and then take the car to the manufacturer to obtain an extended warranty.

I second Carmax.
In regards to BCG1 - A certified pre-owned car warranty generally stops at 5 years from production. So if you are looking at anything older than ‘13 a certified pre owned title is effectively worthless despite their “certification” (given they won’t give a warranty on the car).
Carmax warranty is 5 years from purchase date. You will pay for Carmax’s warranty but you know the certificate pre-owned warranty (assuming you it is a ‘13 and newer) is built into the price. Also if it’s only a year or two old, the manufacturer warranty is probably still in play.
So with carmax you get the same quantity used car, with a stronger warranty, in an easier shopping process, for a lower price.
