Really complicated question. Salaries in Software are typically dictated by where you are living/working (which State). It also can depend on how high profile the position is to the success of the company. Most larger companies use a scaling pay structure. Typically they will hire from the outside at mid-scale (leaning to low or high depending on negotiations). When hiring from within (without management experience), the offer tends to be on the low side of the scale. Sometimes Manager positions will have a lower bonus system. In the SF Bay Area, in a competitive company, you can hope to be somewhere in $160k-240k (potentially 100k in a smaller company, or 300k for top tier). These numbers are rough and affected by whatever the company wants. Number of reports/ic, profile of team or projects, coding manager, in office vs remote. Remember to advocate for yourself, remind the hiring manager why you should be paid more… it’s not because you’re the nearest human. Negotiations are often expected, so be prepared for that. Remember that $5k-$10k extra a year could be a car payment for you, but barely anything for a large company.
Location example: Bay Area and NYC could be at 100% of the above salaries, while Bellevue might be at 80% or Vegas at 60% (at company discretion, these are just examples)
This really depends. There are some high-paying software development management roles but usually depends on your location, yoe and the company. Being in a leadership role is beneficial if you are aiming for a promotion.
Pretty common for senior, staff, and principal engineers to make more than their managers
