What’s a good salary to live comfortably in London? Nothing lavish

Standard without savings but still get to travel, eat out and drinks anywhere between £55,000 - £60,000 Standard + Living and Savings: Around £80,00 All figures for a single person Sadly due to the tax rate being high there’s not a lot of difference in net pay between £70,000-85/90k

like

SC1 : I'm sorry but I'm on 50k and I'm able to save 1.5k a month. Flat sharing.

like

Two of us but single income, we’re living quite comfortably on 90k salary where we eat out maybe twice a week and can still afford weekly personal trainer, 40 quid haircuts every 6 weeks, therapy etc. obviously we don’t typically do drinks out so that’s a huge savings. Don’t save much on a monthly basis but most of bonus (usually 25-30%) is saved.

In London it’s never enough. But we get used to what we have

likefunny

This guy knows London

like

Might be a bit high, but I think if you’re hoping to be able to save some money to eventually buy, have a decent standard of living and get to enjoy what london has to offer - as a single person I’d say … £90,000

like

Wow! How many YOE does one usually get to that?

like

I think about 60k. Currently earning 50k - max out my pension (8%) and manage to invest £500/mo but would be nice to not have to check my bank account anymore.

like

Okay I see I'm also on 50k and able to save 1500/month. Pension set to 0 as I'm leaving the UK in a few years, and rent is 750.

like

Massively depends if you’re single or with kids. A single man can live well on 50k.

like

These numbers are pretty high I’d say. You can comfortably enjoy what London has to offer on anything above £50k

like

Main expense will be housing. That depends on how nice and how central (ie. Walk everywhere) you want it to be. Without kids and renting you can be comfortable on £60k if you're not saving too heavily.

I lived in Holborn for a year and hated it. It's just office buildings and hotels. Super boring and dead on the weekends. Most places will get you quick to St Paul's. I'm in Battersea and I can be there fast and I have green spaces, stuff to do, cheaper rent and a newer build flat

like

The big part is whether you’re happy with taking a spare room or not. I can see your based in Canada and I would put living costs of Vancouver in line with London, maybe slightly higher in BC due to cost of clothes, groceries and utilities, and wages slightly higher in London.

helpful

Trying not to share rooms which is almost the same price as renting in Van!

You can be pretty comfortable on £50-£60k if you live in a flat share. £70k+ to live alone.

like

I felt like I was very comfortable on around £90 to be completely honest. But more money always makes things easier so, ofc, more comfortable now. But it’s all marginal

like

Minimum £75K

like

Currently making 50k, that breaks down to around 3100 a month. Flat sharing for £750 a month, I'm able to save £1500 a month. Groceries, drinks and food takeout are pretty cheap in London.

Is canary wharf really quiet at night? So walking alone after the DLR

It drives me nuts that people keep talking about years of experience (YOE) on this app. YOE doesnt matter! You can be a distinctive performer at a top tier Firm and reach $300k comp in 3 years out of college; while others might take 10+ years to get there...

I’ve been with my firm for a few years. We are back in the office full time for a few weeks now and everyone’s annoyed, comp is ok but some of my friends in biglaw make 2x as much, I bill 2100-2300 regularly, and culture is meh/nonexistent (we do things occasionally but 🤷🏼‍♀️). We have very few female partners and none in my office. I really like my team and the main partner I work for who gives me lots of opportunities and tries to help w BD, but is it time to bolt and to where??

Currently in TCS basic is low around 20-25% of your salary. As per the proposed new wage rules, basic should be 50% of package. So this will eventually increase Gratuity of long timer TCS. In a case, if my Gratuity stands at 1 Lakh say, with new wage rules it will be 2.5 Lakhs.. Is my understanding correct? Will the company pay from their pocket for this?

What salary range would you describe as middle class. LCOL I considered my family middle class when my dad made 50k in the 90s. Life seemed alright. 25 years later my dad and I both are at around 170, but I still consider us middle class like we were in the 90s, but now it feels like more of a struggle
