What's a good watch for a mid-level / senior associate? Looking for gift ideas

That's a tough range to buy in. You can't go cheap but can't really spend big yet.

Technically you can, but you shouldn’t

Maybe an Apple Watch? I know that's kind of cheating

This may not be super popular, but I got a MVMT watch for Christmas and I love it. Its classy and stylish, and not too expensive.

I own a couple of these watches. Minimalist style and low price point. I like them a lot.

Don’t buy them a watch as a gift. If they like watches, they’ll probably want to give input. If they’re mid-senior associate level and haven’t bought themselves a watch yet, they probably don’t care much.

Second this. Watches can be an extremely personal decision if they’re into them. Imagine bringing out the worst parts of a lawyer’s particularity and that’s how watch people are about watches.

Gift them stocks. Gift that keeps on giving forever and they will always remember who gave them that apple, Microsoft, xyz company stock

Shinola is a solid American company. It’s quality, but low profile. Their more base level watches start around $600, and they top out around $2k

I like my Moldavo.

If you can afford it, vintage Rolex date just or oyster flex. They range from $2-4k. Otherwise, consider an automatic Tissot. They’re quality watches with Swiss movements. You can get one for about $500-800.

Oyster perpetual*

Pick a dive watch, any dive watch.

For those who aspire to golden handcuffs, any of the above. For those who don’t, a Casio G Shock - $139 and will last forever.

Depends on what you’re looking to spend, but nice without being “too nice”: Oris, Ball, Maurice LaCroix.

Hi Fishes,

This is my first post regarding needing a job. The company in which I used to work is shifted completely to Nashi, Maharashtra. (It was first established in Noida).

I'm in need of a job in Delhi NCR, so I can commute to work by living with my mother.

I've worked with companies like GPI, OPPO Mobiles etc.

I currently attain the position of QA Manager, but can work in procurement, store, logistics, etc.

Kindly help, I'll be grateful.

Any feedback on PwC forensics practice? Good, bad and ugly?

I recently accepted a management trainee position in Northern California. Just received a call earlier about someone backing out in Austin, Texas and they wanted to know if I would be interested in training there instead of California. They will adjust the compensation because cost of living is cheaper. How do I negotiate with trying to stay in the range of my compensation I initially agreed to, instead of adjusting to the cost of living in Texas?

My 6-month-old is not gaining weight. The baby is in the 60 percentile in terms of height but the 3 percentile in terms of weight.
The baby is active and sharp; everything else is all good. The pediatrician has prescribed anti-reflux medicine but that hasn’t helped much. We say a GI and GI wants to do some trial and error. However, we are scared of the side effects. Has anyone been through this? What worked for you?

MBB in London vs Seattle. Any difference in quality of experience? Family member is from Seattle and only wants to do consulting for a few years for the experience / learning, but likes the idea of working internationally.

Would you choose / recommend differently for post-MBA?

Got this as a gift a while back and thought some of you might find it interesting.

Man, I did it all wrong -- in house life sucks :( Much better to get good grades and f**k off to a professorship after big law.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

If you have gone from one biglaw firm to another, did it make a difference? Why or why not?

What's the difference between white shoe & Magic Circle firms?

I hate the billable hour, the practice of law, and myself. I started out doing ID for a few years. Hated it. Transitioned to an in house gig, which was mostly collections work. Loved the work, but the environment was toxic. Now I do administrative law and I'm back to the billable hour. I live in the middle of nowhere, so I need to find a remote position. I currently make $110k. The jobs in my area pay half what I make. I wish I could find an alternative. I have no time for my family. I give up.

Leaving my first job, switching from plaintiffs PI to defense with a caseload of 80-90 that my firm will not be able to take on when I leave. What’s the best way to go about this? Any other tips for leaving? I don’t have any ill will towards my current firm but this is going to be a major shock and I don’t want to burn bridges.

I’m studying for the Texas bar using Barbri. I am from a good school in the state (T50) and performed well there, but I am terrified that I am going to fail the bar. Any tips, tricks, advice on how you made it through? Is Barbri enough?

Solos - what’s your retainer and hourly fee? And if you care to add your practice area and general location

I have started looking for a new job after being at my first post-law school job for only a couple of months. I’ve been applying and I’ve talked to some recruiters who seem wary of me being early in my career and leaving. Would love some advice from people who have experienced something similar (staying at my current job is not an option at this point)

What is compensation like at Fisher & Phillips for a fourth year associate on the West Coast? What about in Denver? Anyone know what bonuses look like?

Have an analysis I need to finish and send today. Planned on staying up late to do it. Told myself I’d wake up early instead. Stayed up late anyway, not working. Slept through my alarm and woke up at 8:55. Shoot.

I have tons of doc review to do. Easy hours. Just can’t bring myself to do it. They used to say robots would be doing this before I graduated and here we are.

I knew that I was being underpaid but I didn’t realize how much the market has increased in the last 2 years. Recently realized I’m underpaid by 30-40k. I’ve made the partners aware of the current market and now they are in crisis mode but I doubt they can afford to keep me. Do I start applying for jobs? Wait for them to come up with a solution? I’m worried their solution won’t come soon enough.

I’m about to give notice for the first time, anyone have any immediate tips? Thanks in advance

Is there a way to start searching for lateral and in house positions without sharing your name and firm and contact? Want to start seeing what’s out there without talking to recruiters just yet. LinkedIn jobs don’t seem accurate. 6th year home grown corporate NYC associate. Never lateraled and never explored the market, so all advice is welcome!

I was the only associate on a MDL for 4 months, the partner I work with didn’t want me to enter a notice of appearance. Then a new associate joined the firm, one year senior than me. He is assigned to that case and asked to enter notice of apprentice, given lots of responsibilities etc. I feel like I didn’t do anything wrong but being punished for something. Is that normal? Should I be nervous?

Perkins Coie. Why does NALP list 2 different first year salaries for some offices? Do they have a high and low billable hour option? I'd be exploring as a lateral but I'm curious.

Anyone worked in a biglaw for a while and not pull any all nighters? I’m fine with long hours and late nights / weekends but would really rather not stay up all night.

I feel superior to reality stars and then I read about Kylie Jenner's $600 deal with Coty...Not too bad for a brand that launched 4 years ago. Wouldn't mind that kind of cash
