Your first mistake here is that you’re buying your watch for other people. There are no written rules of what watch you buy and when. If you have the means for a Sub or DJ, I say go for it. If that’s what excites you and you like, why not get it. It’s your wrist, no one else’s.
Buy what you like and don’t pay attention to what everyone else thinks
Nobody gives a crap about your watch. Everyone else, just like you, is consumed with what other people are thinking of them that they are not paying attention to you. Buy what will make you happy. Only other thing to consider is that I found that my tastes changed quite a bit in the first few years of watch enthusiasm. Though if you get the Rolex you should have no trouble selling it if you end up falling out of love.

I find peoples watch choices interesting…

Buy for yourself. Not what other people think. It's your money and your wrist after all.
There are plenty of great non-Rolex brands. Tudor, Omega, AP, Breitling, Cartier, IWC, JLC, Longines, Glashutte... Buy what you find interesting.

Yea yea do what makes you happy and all but an new omega Seamaster for a 10-20% discount from an AD is the correct answer
Aqua terra is the ultimate GADA watch right now

If you have the money for a patek nautilus or an AP as your first watch and you like it then buy it my friend. I don’t think anybody is going to care that you bought a Rolex for your first one.
Omega is a solid first lux watch. The AT offers a very solid movement (cal 8900) , high quality finishing, great looking dial colors and phenomenal versatility ( bracelet/ rubber). You can also get these for around USD 4.2K ( new/unworn) from a reputable grey market dealer or but fromAD with no wait! Get it….
The only additional thing that a sub/ DJ will get you is more brand recognition/ cache and the opportunity to kiss a Rolex ADs behind!
Didn’t want to deal with the wait for a DJ, so I grabbed a bb58. Love it
Get what YOU want, OP. Most people won’t even know what’s on your wrist
Hit up ADs to get on lists for a sub and get a moonwatch in the meantime. Pros - you can actually buy them, not as recognizable to non watch people, and watch people love them and will want to talk about it

I absolutely love my AT. Have been looking for a new watch, but then always come to realize nothing I can afford will compare to the AT so it would probably sit on my dresser 99% of the time.
