Senior Directors are the cornerstone of our delivery model. If you can take care of a project independently, guide the team, deliver exceptional results, and keep the engagement MD informed and involved so she can focus on relationship building and selling more, you deserve the money. AFAIK there is no pressure to move to MD level unless you want to. It’s a different job.

like

This is coming from a friendly place. I think you need to look at this from the MD / firms perspective and ask a different question. Traditionally we had a high utilization model and everyone is so busy for client work so there was less urgency/need for BD, relatively speaking. However, Covid hit and utilization is not as high. This created financial stress to pay highly salaried people. So the firm needs to generate more business to make the financial plan. Also, there are more people on the beach, relatively speaking again. Hence people have more time to contribute to the firm other than project work. That said, the question is not about whether you want to be promoted to MD or not. I bet the firm would be happy to have people doing MD work for a director salary. The better question is how you could make a case for yourself. Are you highly billable that you get over 100%, say 120% utilization? If so then you could tell the practice that you can do those things but client work comes first. If not, then you need to ask yourself what value you bring to the table other than project delivery, and how those things add value to the firm and fit in the practices priority. AlixPartners is a great firm and you would figure it out. Just be open minded and candid about your priority, people would respect that. Good luck my friend.

When they tell you you're getting promoted, whip out a Game Boy (or GBA if you're feeling bougie), insert any Pokémon game, and rapidly mash B. They'll get the message and you'll stop evolving into Partner

likefunnyhelpful

I've been carrying an Everstone in my pocket. No wonder I never get promoted.

Hear ye hear ye, your lives suck, mine is better, and my wife makes big stacks. No offense but I’ll take a hard pass on that promote

“I’m not interested in the partner track”. There are plenty that are so wishes are respected and we move on to the next one.

This post is weird.

You just have to set that expectation explicitly. I’m in the same boat, making $500k and not interested in becoming an MD. I flat out told them I am more interested in becoming a career director, with some involvement in BD (but not so much ), and some practice development. My comp will grow much slower than some others who are really pushing for it but I’m ok with it.

like

Yeah, there’s definitely a push at all levels in the group I’m in to be heavily involved in pd and bd. I’m not a director yet but have no interest in ever being an MD so a lot of that stuff strikes me as boring. I’d much rather just focus on client work (including helping win that work as necessary), but that doesn’t seem “acceptable”. I don’t know if that’s normal across other groups or not.

Why did you have to bring up money at all,

like

Lol, I’m not bitter. I’m saying is that the OP could have said “financially, making Partner doesn’t change our lifestyle” rather than “I make 500k and my wife makes cash too”. Regardless, the second part of my comment is worth the OP thinking about. Are they okay with their current subordinates moving up in the pecking order while they stay put? I thought I was and then I realized I wasn’t a few years later. But by that time, I’d blown my chance at that firm. I changed firms and am trying for it.

This gets more replies from Alix folks in the general bowl than the Alix bowl! I'm also a Director at Alix and don't have interest in being MD. I'm happy with the comp. but do have pressure to do practice development stuff that I wish would just go away. I have no sales pressure.

like

Why did you need to tell them? I thought we have a more flexible model without the up or out at MBB.

If you are happy and satisfied with work, you’ve found the dream. Stay at level until that changes for you. If it never changes, that is OK. Great job finding a company and role that fulfills you!

Wait... What level are you at AlixPartners? Director? How are you making that much? Would you be willing to share your base compared to bonus, and city?

Happy to chat (here or DM is fine), I’ve had a pretty great 3 years here.

So you are at a director level and are being pushed to become a md?

Hey APOP what industry group are you in? I’m an SVP right now (3 yrs post MBA) and honestly your situation is my career goal. Any advice?

I’m EI, industry group would probably give me away. Advice... develop expertise an area and be known for it. Treat everyone else with respect and work with people you like. That will at least carry you to the higher end of the comp scale at director.

Hi ladies. I work in IT consulting and we don’t typically have to put notes in for billable hours, but a few weeks ago my boss asked me to start entering notes, about what exactly I was working on for client A,B,and C. I just said sure and didn’t ask why. I found out today from other colleagues that no one else was asked to enter notes in for their time. What’s a good way to ask my boss why the new change? I’d at least like to know if I did something wrong so I can improve.

Honest question: when you see a job listing like so, is your reaction... A. Good for them insisting on BIPOC; this industry needs more diversity & hiring the same middle aged white folks doesn't cut it anymore. or B. YES, every agency/brand should champion diversity but is it fair, right or even "legal" to overtly dissuade white people from applying? Can't they just "hire the best candidate" regardless of race/gender/etc? I get B but I'm team A because the 2nd ? in B hasn't exactly..worked.
