I have a small firm and am contemplating acquiring a practice from a retiring attorney. The plan would be to bring him into the firm for a year or two first to transition the clients. Is there a standard payment structure once he retires? Such as percent collected each month from his client base? Agreed upon salary for a set amount of time? I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

Question about clearing conflicts - I’m in my first few years of practice and I just got an offer to lateral from one big law firm to another. I am in a transactional practice and am currently working on a deal where my new firm is representing the opposing party. I imagine this is relatively common in big law and am wondering what to expect in terms of clearing conflicts - especially as a more junior associate on the matter.

M&A associates- how long does it take you to prepare a good first draft of a purchase agreement? Let’s say for a client you have worked for before but the deal now is a different structure than what is typical for them and therefore requires a merger of a couple of different agreements and changes specific to the deal.

For reference I am a 2nd year and find some of the deadlines for these instances unreasonable. I’m wondering if I am just slow at this or what…

I had an interview for an in-house position this week. The recruiter asked me how much I was making, I said $X on the spot. She almost gasped and the interview ended quickly. Is this common? I thought by now this would be semi-public information or you’d at least have a ballpark idea before reaching out to people.

Gave notice yesterday. Teams are still shoveling more work on me. What’s the best way to communicate that I’ll wrap up the stuff I’m already on and work to transition my cases but I’m not wiling to pull all nighters for the duration of my notice period because they can’t be bothered to adequately staff up these cases?
