There is a little bit of science to what you can get away with. If it's on the shorter side, make sure it isn't also tight. A-line and a little short - not super noticeable. Super tight pencil skirt and 3 inches above your knee - no good.
Leg length has a lot to do with it too. I'm short but wear a 33inch inseam, so have to watch how far above the knee a skirt hits. 3 inches above standing would be 5-6 inches above sitting, so inappropriate for me. Good rule of thumb--between knee and 1-2 inches above is usually safe. Depending on styling and cut as others have mentioned. Always give it the 'sit test' and remember you never want to be memorable for your clothing 😏.
I asked a similar question a few weeks ago. Definitely a science like M1 says, but don’t forget to factor in your top, shoes, and body type. I’m relatively tall and flat chested, so skirts tend to look shorter but I don’t worry about cleavage. Hope this helps! I can dig up some of the helpful comments I gathered if you like!
Echo the sit test, in front of a mirror. You don’t want people to be able to see up your skirt while sitting and you don’t want to constantly have to keep pulling it down.
