What's compensation in Houston like?

I'll be pushing $200k this year after five years in consulting. There's many AWS, Microsoft, and other big tech job postings at most any given time. Consulting is easy to get into as well here. O&G is pretty hit or miss with too much parity in pay between good and bad talent (anecdotal). I'd go crazy. I find the competition to be low as well in Houston. With the right skillset and company, you can get paid just as well as hotter cities and live quite comfortably. The stability of this city is hard to beat if you steer away from O&G. As far as living, I recommend the westside. Specifically, anywhere between 610 and Highway 6. Energy corridor and north Spring Branch are ideal locations if you're not willing to fork over $750k+ for a decent 3 bedroom. Public schools will be sh*t everywhere with a Houston zip code, unless you're in the $1M+ zones.

Typically lower than most larger cities, with the exception of the few tech/O&G jobs that are in high demand. Think of 20% lower wages in general. Cost of living is not cheap (the prevailing perception), especially if you want to live in good school districts closer to the city.

Thanks for your advice! My wife is actually from Houston but moved to London for college and has been here since. We are planning moving back to the US whilst she completes her MBA. In-laws still live in Houston so wanted to consider my career ops here too.

Memorial and the heights are awesome but I think a little out of budget for us.. property taxes sting!

Austin is a fad and there are few job options outside of the few tech firms. Houston has some diversification but the job search cycles are slower. Dallas has a thriving job market but is a dull cookie cutter city sans any character!

like

Not bad. Lots of F500 companies. COL is relatively low, but the city is a lot more expensive than it was 10 years ago.

If O&G is a no go, is there any benefit over Austin? I know COL is higher in Austin but I wonder if the presence of tech etc outweighs it?

Austin COL is about 1.8x Houston.

I got an offer for $140k base salary, plus annual 15% bonus, and I think like 500 shares equity, for an in-house commercial contracts attorney position. I have 10 years experience. I think I should go back with at least $150k, but do you think I should go higher? I was told there “isn’t much wiggle room” but we all know that’s usually bs. Also, how do I ask for a signing bonus and how much should I ask for? Thank you all in advance!

Hi Fishes,

I recently got an offer from PWC for Associate Director position.

I understand PWC shows the fixed component only as part of compensation benefit.

Can you please let me know how much bonus I can expect?

Can you please also let me know what is the annual hike provided by PWC?

Recently received an offer from a company in the middle of their anticipated salary expectation. I might have to relocate but their office is set up for remote working. I initially asked to work remotely which they denied (I haven’t yet brought up money). If I’m going to take the offer and stay where I currently live, should I ask for the offer to be increased?

Just had a series of interviews started in September and finally ended in November last week only to be told that suddenly I'm not a great fit for the job. Recruiter had called sometime in October and told me that I was a top candidate for the job and though they couldn't tell me to stop considering taking interviews with other companies they felt I was an almost lock for the job. Lesson learnt stay Strictly transactional until you sign the final contract👌
