What’s Critical Mass like for creatives?

I was going to say something snarky about banners, but the truth is Critical Mass is high end digital, in the sense they get a little time on shoot days to do their no-audio, 9:16 cinemagraphs. Sometimes they even get their own shoots. But in the end its digital stuff, there are a shitload of banners and mobile—and theyre still creatives at heart, so they feel frustrated and under utilized. But we all feel that way all the time I suppose.

Fine, I’ll go first… “not critical at all.” Happy now? Jeeze. (BBDO 1’s comment is the correct one)

I think it depends somewhat on the account you’re on. I know I’m in a lot of meetings that feel like they’re trying to build culture, but it feels disrespectful of my time. The pay is pretty good, and most days end by 5. If you’re used to doing fun, conceptual work and want to keep at that, it may not be the place for you. Lots of people have been here a long time though, myself included, so that says something.

I’m here for the snarky banner comments.

BBDO1 kinda nailed it. Still want to make big-time above the line work? Prob not for you. More interested in cutting edge digital, tech product and design work? There are more opportunities for that sort of thing, although like everywhere else the....less fun stuff that pays the bills has to get done. And like all of advertising, it's now a lot of that. Does it matter less to you at this point what you work on, as long as you work with solid people at a place that encourages you to have a life? Great work-life balance and people there. Stellar client list too, including two of the top brands I'd say most creatives dream of working on. Lastly, it's my understanding that they're more generous than other places including BBDO (both are Omnicom shops), but that's just hearsay so take it or leave it.

Need to move to the burbs w/fiancee, but where? Staying in BK is not an option, though we will eventually work in the city 1-2 days/week (someday?). Won't do long island, need a 2 car garage w/space to work on cars and also space for a woodshop whether it's in basement or elsewhere. Planning on having kids and because we'll work from home a lot still need office space. I grew up in burbs and it wasn't so bad because I lived walking distance to train station into the city & nice downtown. 800k!

I’m thankfully hitting my hours, but my firm keeps passing non-billable work my way. I am grateful for the opportunities, but this type of work always seems to find its way to the female associates at my firm. We have been told that non-billable work is irrelevant in terms of our annual hours. Any tips on how to navigate this in a thoughtful way? I want to be a team-player, but I believe that others need to step up to the plate.
