What’s everyone’s thoughts on Havas parting ways with Jason Peterson? Was it warranted? Sure the installation stunt in CHI was childish, but dude was the global CCO .. their clients have to be on edge

Bringing in Lil Yachty to rap about ravioli was about as conceptual as it got with JP. Let’s see, there was ravioli rap, Hardee’s country auto tune rap, sprite rap...any other rap I’m missing? Actually surprised they didn’t do a Glad Wrap Rap.

This won’t impact shit. He never brought in real money and never increased client spend. At the end of the day, this is a money making business and the guy just wasn’t doing that at all. He was polarizing for all the wrong reasons. Plus, he was kinda an asshole who dressed as a hypebeast - and those are just the worst.

Yes, he was CCO, and "parting ways" with your CCO could definitely affect client relationships. If one assumes that executive leadership aren't a bunch of blithering idiots, then they're fully aware of potential client reactions. And they "parted ways" anyway. So it's not too hard to do the math on whether or not executive leadership thought it was warranted. Hell...it's possible that client reactions to what was going on impacted the decision.

@OP yes but he’s all talk. Link us to anything Havas made for a client, that actually demonstrates their understanding of new media

Oh wait, they have Hefty, not Glad Wrap. Bet they wish they had Glad Wrap now, though.

His take isn’t some mind blowing revelation. The trend with dudes like him and other social agencies is they “identify” these trends and don’t use it to advance their client work or dictate culture. They use it to prop up mediocre ideas and creative so it pops the analytics. I haven’t seen any work from Havas that would a) justify his arrogance b) justify keeping him.

It was. His reputation among the industry was uniformly horrible. So he knows there are social media influencers? Guess who else does. Everyone. Also, love that you mentioned Logan Paul, whose reputation is equally appalling. Not sure if that was intentional or not, but they are a good pairing of shitheads. Throw Kanye in there for good measure .

What has this "innovative mind" actually made besides his own Instagram?

OP can you actually share one piece of creative that he has done that was “innovate”? Have you ever actually searched him and tried to find something online that has his name attached to it or even before he was C Level? It’s just a question. Not bad mouthing I’m just curious.

Obviously the C-level folk thought it was warranted. That’s why it happened. I’m asking the opinion of the rest of the Ad community.. If i need to be more specific, I feel he’s an innovative mind in an industry that touts ‘outside of the box’ thinking but inevitably inhibits creativity to meet the bottom line. Is this a case of “oh no we got bad press, we have to do something about it”. Or was he actually that bad of a leader. If anyone from Havas CHI could chime in that would be dope! Also the titles of CCO and Global CCO carry hella different weights. Havas isn’t a mom and pop shop.. this isn’t just going to effect local or national comm architecture.. but international...

I think a fair number of people commenting are somewhat uninformed. The Annex was opened as a result of a major, competitive pitch victory led by JP; though I acknowledge the client and industry involved are also divisive. Prior to this, JP led and won pitches for brands such as Dish (gaining not just the digital portion, but obtaining AOR status from BFG) and stopped then-marquis clients such as Dos Equis from walking out the door years earlier than they eventually did. He was brought in to NYC with a group of his creatives from Chi, and dropped in a situation he was reckoned to have no chance of winning. He did. He did this all while having to report into the ongoing game of musical chairs being played in the C-Suite. His boss pretty much changed from month to month. Managing both up and down in that kind of situation is seriously hard work. This I can now comment upon, having experienced similar. Did JP do things he shouldn’t have done? I don’t know, I wasn’t there when said events transpired, so I can’t objectively add an opinion. From the way the events were received here in FB, that seems to be a prevailing sentiment. Ok, maybe he fucked up, but he’s human. We all fuck up. However, I would like to advise people to ensure they have as much of the full story as possible before wading in wielding thumbs mightier than swords. JP has done a lot of good for a lot of people too. As usual in this industry, we get more excited about dragging people down than building them up. We’re all guilty of it. But let’s try and behave like adults. So, like I said, I am not casting judgement either way, I am merely suggesting we all try to understand as much of a story as possible before going all out in attack or defense. And I am no exception to this rule; none of us should be. For the record, I used to work at Havas Chi before The Annex. It wasn’t perfect, I had frustrations. I probably whined about them too. However, later on I got to experience what JP dealt with on a daily basis and realized I’d been judging without having full insight. I also realized how much he had succeeded in shielding us all from political bullshit being sprayed all over the place by managers, departments and clients. Like I said, knowing the entire picture made me realize just how good he was as a CCO. You may not like his methods, you may not like the man, but is your stance based on knowing every side of the job he performed, the demands placed upon him and the genuine person he is? I highly doubt it.

If he was that innovate why was he at Havas?

Havas1 .. thats what i had thought, Adweek cited him as global as of this past year though. CD1, I interviewed at Havas and with Jason directly. From what I’ve seen/experienced, he understands how media is shaping culture and how we should be reacting to it... Snapchat, The Logan Paul’s of the world... we all talk about how it’s not the mad men era anymore, but very few big shops adapt until it’s necessary to keep up. His thought process on content vs multi-million dollar ad campaigns is pretty relevant right now.

It has to be affecting their talent retention and rake the acquisition so unless he was more valuable than all those people he pushed or encouraged out and all those he preventing joining Havas - he wasn’t worth it. Hard to imagine anyone doing well in such a cLculation

OP - liking social media and seeing the obvious media trends is not the same as delivering great work. Name some great work he was behind. If you’re going to be an asshole, you need to be a genius. In this industry and any other.

Definitely warranted. There is NOTHING proprietary about our industry other than our talented people. No creative in America wants to work for him now, so that’s a major, major issue. Havas probably realized they’d never get off the ground with him driving away talent.

@ECD sure that's fine, and it's good to hear he has good qualities and experience. You cant just "I wasnt there" the stupid PR though. He called other agencies shitty, said stuff about clients like "if they dont become a social brand, they wont be around in two years." (yeah right--Hefty bags??) And then all the laughable giant-emo-kid stuff about Supreme and Kanye. That was to an industry journalist, and a company wide video. So the guy wasnt so savvy. Your level head and inside info is appreciated for sure...Im not sure you can high and mighty everybody about "acting like adults" though, when the guy acted like Havas gave a dumbass 13 year old with a finsta account the CCO title, and thought that wouldnt reflect poorly on him.

The reality is the opposite: his embarrassing PR was very quickly giving Havas a terrible name. They had no choice to fire him before his shit got out of control and clients started ending relationships. This is mostly my perspective, but I do have a significant other that works there
