What’s good wording to check in with a partner and let them know you’ve made headway on an assignment, and will have it to them in the next 24 hours. Trying to avoid the “what’s the status” email.

“Hey [big daddy partner], just wanted to touch base and send you an update on [assignment]. Making great progress on x,y,z. I am currently tying up 1,2,3, I expect to have this to you by [date] before [time].

If you have any questions in the meantime, please let me know.”

“Chill bro, I’ll have that [insert description of assignment] ready for you within the next 24 hours.”

In all seriousness, I give the assigning partner a realistic estimate as to when the assignment will be completed at the beginning. If I can’t make that deadline, I just say something to the effect of “just writing to let you know that I’m almost done with X and I’ll have it ready for you by the end of business tomorrow.”

Are there any “best practices” as it relates to giving notice? Currently practicing in somewhat of a specialist group and lateraling to re-tool to a practice area I’m more interested in and also relocating to LA (where I’m from), so not necessarily competitive but I’ve been in this group for 3 years and have received very positive feedback on my work and built solid relationships/mentorships so curious if y’all have any pointers to avoid inadvertently “burning bridges” as they say…

Do you ever feel like people don’t like you? I’m a fairly naive person, but stay genuine. I’m still relatively early in my career but in internships and places I’ve worked I have always been burnt by others, talked down behind my back, told that I can’t do xyz positions and to look for easier things. Maybe I annoy people and that’s why they don’t like me. But lately I feel like I’ve been listening to the hate especially when it came from a supposed work “friend”. It really brought me down.

I think I'm realizing the reason why I hate my job is simply because I do not love law in general. I've jumped around, changed practice areas to an area I "love" at a very chill firm and still find it so hard to want to go to work. I used to be on the creative writing/author track. To me, it's so hard to find creativity with legal writing. I try to get some side projects on the side to satisfy my creativity need, but it's not cutting it. Anyone else feel this way?

Recommendation for those who haven’t heard of this:

If you use Google Chrome, I highly recommend you download the ProKeys extension and implement it into your billing practices. You can create “snippets” (abbreviations) for template billing entries and auto-populate the full text just by typing in the snippet and hitting a hot key. The extension functions anywhere in your web browser (but you can disable it on certain sites if necessary.)

Check it out! Let me know if you have questions.

I authored all of the briefs in a 9th circuit appeal. My managing partner did the oral argument. Opinion was issued today; and we lost on appeal. The decision was issued as “for publication” opinion. Do I add this case to my Resume/CV list of published opinions? Yes, we’re on the losing side (we lost below too; we were the appellant); but it’s still a published case where I was the brief writer.
