Is caste bias still a thing in urban India? I grew in Hyderabad in the 80s and do not remember caste ever being something that came up. Everyone I knew had a diverse group of friends that came from different backgrounds - brought together because they were either in the same class, or lived in the same neighborhood, or participated in the same extra curricular activities. Most of us are still friends even though we are now scattered around the world.
(Same is true for my parents also, but they may have been an exception vs. norm).
In fact, caste was never a topic of discussion except the one time when we were looking at college admissions and some of us got slightly better opportunities due to the prevailing reservation system at that time.
That and during elections - by prospective politicians trying to stir up vote bank politics.
Not sure if other cities/regions were different then. And curious if that is still a thing today. 🤔

It's usually not a point of discussion unless planning marriages.

Don’t think it is a thing in urban centers.
Think still exists in rural India but more as an identity thing rather than in a discriminatory way
In my 18 years have never encountered anything in US. Most of the Indians would not know caste
A small experiment below
Please guess the caste in responses for following names

Yeah I'm a bania, interestingly some states have lobbied to get us OBC (other backward class) status so we can get affirmative action benefits - im not sure where we landed on that. All I know is it's never been an accelerant or a deterrent for me.
Caste bias shows up while getting married.
For sure.
