What’s it like living in San Fran vs New York for someone in tech with a good salary? The thought of the San Fran commute terrifies me

I have a biased opinion on it but I’ve lived in both those cities, so I can give you my opinion. Also when I say New York, I’m talking about my Manhattan perspective. Public transportation: New York wins hands down. The whole time I lived in SF I couldn’t find a good way to use public transportation that fits my commute path. Safety: New York wins again. San Francisco I found has a little less safe. Mostly tenderloin and anywhere near a BART station. I’ve heard some horror stories, including one startup moving office buildings because of safety concerns. Lifestyle: New York still has a more formal culture where early mornings are a thing and San Francisco is more lax. Even in the same company, these rules apply. But if you’re looking for fun things to do on the weekend, restaurants, theater, music, I would say both are on par. I would vote New York just because of broadway but that’s just me. Clubbing is much better in New York though. Weather: San Francisco feels like the same weather all the time. A bit cold, foggy or sunny. New York has four distinct weathers. And it does have extreme temperatures. Snowfall is sparse but we do get the occasional snowstorm. Fall is just beautiful. But you’d need a winter wardrobe. Beaches: San Francisco and the surrounding areas win this one. NE beaches have cold water all the time! Food: This is not objective. Both have eclectic mix of offerings but for me New York wins this one.
