What’s it like to work at Amazon / AWS as a software engineer? Saw several PIP, devPlan etc stories online. Can someone please shed some light. Thank you

it's a hire to fire situation to be sure, but if you're good at your job you should have a long runway. It's competitive, sure, but the reason people get PIP'd is typically due to performance. This is why it doesn't pay to apply for FAANG before you're ready. It's worth being very confident that you'll hit the marks when you get there, and then you don't have to be worrying about other people running you over.

It does happen, maybe more than at other companies. I agree that you should be at a stage where you are very confident in your work before applying for a position with AMZN.

Where do you work now? What specifically are you interested in knowing? How hard it is?

Nothing in particular, just exploring few roles at Amazon.

I’ve heard way too many horror stories. It seems like its not just the hire to fire as the end goal, but the continuing thought that every little mistake you make could build up and you’re at risk of pip at any point. This creates a very competitive environment with the office politics and employees trying to undercut others and managers trying to meet their ura quota. Over time this stress pretty much becomes psychological abuse. On the flip side if you’re willing to work your butt off you have an opportunity to work beside some of the smartest engineers and learn how to work services at extreme scale. Bottom line if you can survive you’ll become a better engineer and looks good on your resume. Best of luck 👍

Someone want to explain how everyone in consulting can be this duped... we accept promotions for more responsibilities without knowledge of compensation... that literally doesn’t happen anywhere else. How dumb are we? Ps. I don’t count myself, I’ve never taken a promotion without jumping firms :) though plan on doing it next year - as SM

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

I’ve been interviewing and I’m running out of excuses for being out of the office randomly and without much notice. I’ve used doctor’s appointment, dentist, “personal reasons” and an emergency appliance issue. Any others people have used? I don’t have kids, so none of those will work. Had an interview scheduled for Tuesday just now.
