Good luck getting an answer. They all already left.
Here’s an honest, non-snarky answer based on personal experience:
Work-wise, it entirely depends on your team (both the people you work with and the community / group you’re in). Just about everyone cross-department is wonderful to jam with, regardless of the ask — but the ask itself totally teeters between interesting, book-worthy projects and keep-the-lights-on work. So if you’re applying, make SURE you get a straight answer on what they’re hiring you for AND, more importantly, what role they see you taking on in the near future. We have a bad habit of hiring project-by-project, so sometimes people get stuck on clients with no mobility.
Make sure you’re also assigned a solid manager who can be instrumental in helping you find new opps. And if for some reason that relationship is lagging, flag it sooner than later so you don’t get forgotten or feel stagnant.
Culturally, it’s actually pretty great given the hybrid model. You’re not expected to come into the office (unless you’d like to); FTO is truly flexible and, no, no one’s really counting the days as long as you’re not taking off weeks at a time, months in a row; and they’re legitimately trying to add more transparency into D&I initiatives (if that’s on your radar) and the state of the agency, overall. Communities are also trying to find new ways to connect people who aren’t face-to-face like it used to be, so there are also ways to get to know people IRL, if you’d like to.
If you’re UX or systematic/product design, it’s a good time to join. If you’re an AD, it might be worth looking into more traditional shops where pure campaign is the bread and butter because we’re actively picking up more work around the former. If you’re a writer, it’s both a gold mine and land mine, depending on where your interests lie (you’ll be in high demand but you could get stretched thin because there are less CWs but most projects need them).
I hope that helped! And feel free to DM if you have specific questions. I’m a creative in the NY office now.
