What’s it like working on a PE ops team? What’s the day to day like? Thinking something like KKR capstone and Insight Onsite

To share with you, my time is basically spent across 4 buckets: 5-10% on firm strategy, investment sourcing, initial strategy and implications of targets (like what happens if we do a carve out of X) 20-30% on live DD (both initial and detailed), working with investment partners as collaborators. Usually 2-3 “active” ones. This would include talking to management teams, looking at data and analyses, hiring consultants for CDD, TDD, etc 40-50% on PortCo work (post close), working with management team on value creation plans, driving them, metrics and monitoring, sitting on a few PortCos as Board observer 10-20% on practice and knowledge building, including hiring for the practice, professional development, aligning on what consultants we need on what topic vs what we do in house (and how to up our knowledge in those areas)

There is no real structured process, especially in Ops. Investment team is quite structured, particular for IBD BB analysts and pre COVID. I got my role via a headhunter (reached out with LinkedIn or email). Would suggest talking to colleagues and alums, many ex-McKers in this space.

Depends a lot on the firm. On the best teams, the work is a true mix between investing (helping select assets to own), strategy (defining value creation plan) and execution (actually leading major programs within portcos, taking interim roles), all in equal and close partnership with the investment teams and management teams, and with extremely talented and accomplished colleagues. On the worst teams, the work is about trying to improve performance of portfolio companies without real partnership with the investing or management teams and without real power, with lower tier colleagues that are not necessarily well respected within the private equity firm. Most PE Ops teams fall in the second category, with very few exceptions.

Any examples of the good ops teams?

Depends on how you define “good” In terms of team size, you can likely go to each of the firms site and see, plus a proxy via LinkedIn (as some MF do not post every single team member) For actual role and work, would need to talk to them directly as it is usually not publicly posted. You may glean a little more speeches and events on PE operating groups if you have access to those.

Anyone else frustrated that their friends don't have enough money or PTO to do anything fun? I'm 28, single, and I really want to jetset at least a LITTLE after this whole pandemic, but I don't have any adventure buddies :( not trying to sound spoiled- in the case of my friends, they just chose more restrictive career paths. I'm afraid to lose these years before people are married and having kids and REALLY can't do anything
