Does anybody have any advice when applying to postings with many applicants and getting noticed? The company I am interested in is Figma, and though I reached out to a few technical recruiters after applying through LinkedIn, I am wondering if there might be something more I could do that maybe I’m not thinking about. Also along those lines, if anybody here works for figma I would love the chance to connect
Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM

For a resume: Brand. A resume is generally to land an interview where a non technical recruiter or member of HR is a big decision maker.
Once in the interview room, tech is more important. You are typically speaking to your peers and your immediate boss who needs to figure out if you have the capability to do the job
I agree with the 1st comment above. Ever since I started working for big name companies, I noticed that I get more recruiters reaching out to me and sometimes I get asked about those companies that I used to work for in interviews.
Tbh, the tech I’ve worked with has been mostly garbage lol. If you’ve been in this industry long enough, you’ll find out that large companies outside of tech have horrible infrastructures. But you can’t tell that from a piece of paper! 😅

Brand. Any day.
After working at 2 FAANGs I don’t really have to job hunt, recruiters typically reach out.
+1 to M1. It’s much harder to get noticed and get to the interview stage without the right brands on your resume.
Brand for sure to beat the ATS. Work for some big name companies that people know of first. Lots of people who work at FAANG take risks by joining startups right after but since they have a big brand on the resume they could easily switch back to a more stable job.
I’m going to disagree a bit. Just because you worked for Google doesn’t mean I want to hire you.
Understanding what you’ve done and the impact it had is more important. Having detailed projects with your contribution and results is much more valuable than I worked at meta. There’s plenty of people at FAANGs that are coat tail riders.

I don't think this is cut and dry. For some jobs, they are looking for experience with specific tech. In others, where you worked and the projects you worked on matter more. The Job Listing usually informs you which is more important and how you should approach your discussions with the Recruiter or HM.
Recognizable brand gets your foot in the door. Once you're in, it can also add a lot of credibility if you're working around priple that don't have equivalent name brand experience.
"When I was at _____ we introduced ____" holds a lot more weight to a most people just based on brand recognition vs relevance.
I agree the Brand doesn't make the person (I've worked with a couple of people with FAANG experience who were useless... possibly why they were no longer there), but it does act as instant credibility in most circles. IMO, more valuable than an MBA as far as resume value or opening doors is concerned
