They use very, very nice fabrics and make a lot of their stuff by hand (or at least with significant manual input) in Italy. Then they add a 1000% markup for the name
It’s the supply chain and where they get the wool from
The quality of the fabrics. LP was an mill before it was a fashion brand. Cashmere is like sushi - you can get it everywhere but the good stuff is on another level.
Congratulations, you've identified the point where my analogy breaks down
The small fingers of all of the 11 years olds working on every single stitch.
LP is a vertically integrated cashmere manufacturer with a storied past. It was only within the last 20 years or so that they got into manufacturing fully finished garments. Supposedly out of all the fabrics, they reserve the best batches for their RTW.
They have always been expensive, but ever since their majority stake acquisition by LVMH prices have inevitably creeped up even more.
They use very rare and therefore expensive yarn to produce their best garments. Their workmanship is still excellent but having been part of LVMH portfolio for almost 10 years took its toll on quality. LVMH turns luxury into boring commodities. Still, quality of their cashmere is great.
It's way overpriced for the quality, but the mill does produce nice cloth. I don't think they manufacture their own knits
Update - I got a Loro Piano cashmere scarf for Christmas. The fabric is like no other cashmere I have ever worn. It's dense, smooth, almost felted. You can feel the quality.
Congratulations on the purchase.
The quality!!!
Marketing and brand positioning for the most part. They produce some of the best fabrics but their RTW is just meh.
It’s the fabric. Their scarves are my go-to for winter. And I have a few sweaters from them. To me, their sizes fit a bit too big for me—I’m very slim and wiry. I think the smallest waist they have is 32”, so I can’t wear their trousers. I made the mistake years ago to have a custom made overcoat from them. Cost me thousands, and really wasn’t worth it. I wear much cheaper ones I bought off the rack from Neiman Marcus store brand and Kooples that actually fit much better and, again, were much cheaper.
