Risk-averse client and teeny tiny budgets, leading to mostly bland, safe work. Once in every 3-4 years, you’ll have an agency do something cool that gets noticed at Cannes, but the momentum is never sustained. Also, lowish salaries and an expensive af housing/rental market.
A lot of agencies, some do great work. Decent community of people. Most of the biggest clients in Canada are handled by Toronto agencies.
For recruiters, Rob Lawrence is a good guy.
Agree with ACD1, having worked/lived in both – way smaller budgets and a national campaign in Canada is teeny compared to US.
That being said it also depends on where you are in life. My friends who have kids and are settled down in TO have it easier than trying to do that here.
Also there are more cultural differences and nuances than one might think.
Wouldn’t recommend it tbh. Expensive housing/lifestyle with stagnant, lower wages
It’s alive and well - try connecting with David Smith The Headhunter - he seems well connected in the market
Yes! Reach out to Sarah and Adrian at IQ Partners. They are super amazing.
Where are you coming from??
I've worked in both. Currently in Toronto. It's a far cry from NYC. Be prepared for that. More risk averse clients, smaller budgets, etc.
I'd move to a smaller American market before I moved to Toronto. Colorado, Austin, Minneapolis, KC... Somewhere that has bigger American clients, but not the hecticness of NYC.
However, a CD coming from NYC wouldn't have any trouble getting recruiters or internal resource managers or ecds to write them back.
Just put "CD from NYC" in the subject and you should be alright.
Thanks ACD1. What are the shops doing the best work in Toronto? What brought you to Toronto? Why don’t you go to NY or a smaller American market?
I'm Canadian and I have a kid now, so Toronto is easier for us. No visas needed, etc.
The shops in Toronto I think are best or have the best potential are:
John St.
Rethink.
Ogilvy.
McCann.
Bbdo.
Taxi
Leo
Cossette.
