That truly is good advice!

Be true to yourself. If you are a 'nice' person you can still have effective classroom management. Have high expectations for your students. Let your students see how passionate you are about what you teach. Prepare well, make sure that you complete any worksheets you expect your students to complete so that you can spot any errors and make sure the instructions are clear and easy to understand.

like

Choose your battles wisely. Make connections with your students as people and let them see who you are, both in and out of the classroom. Own up to your mistakes; it allows students to see how they should deal with their own errors.

Be honest to yourself and your students.
Background: My coop teacher told me to keep my life separate from the students, a deep gorge. Then, my first year teaching my grandmother died, my first major loss. I wasn’t aware how much pain I’d dig into until I made kids cry. (I was a specials teacher.) their teacher came out to ask what went wrong. I told her about my grandmother. She said tell them. They will understand. She was right. I apologized to her class the next day and explained why I’d not been myself. Every student in her class hugged me and told me everything would be okay. I’ve never kept my joys or pains secret after that. 27 years later, I let my students see my humanity as much as I see theirs. 💗💖💗

Say thank you to advice and donations. You do not need to tell the person giving it that you don't want to use it. Keep open to new ways but stay true to you.

At the end of the day, write good things that happened in the front of a notebook and bad things that happened at the back of the notebook. Get all of it out of your system.

On frustrating days, go to the notebook and compare how many good things happen overall to how many bad things happen overall. It helps you keep perspective.

After teaching 27 years, I’ve been given lots of good advice.
1. Students may not remember everything you taught them, but they will remember if you cared about them.
2. After leaving the school building each day, ask yourself, did you do the very best you could today? If you say yes, then that’s all you can ask of yourself.
3. When getting a nasty email, wait at least a couple hours to reply.
4. When replying to parent emails, only answer questions contained in the email. No questions, no response necessary.
5. NEVER have drinks with colleagues.

Be willing to do all the tasks/assignments that you would ask your students to do. It allows you to see what they will have to think about, what skills they have to use, & what could be a struggle they might have. It also gives you credibility with the kids because you aren't asking them to do stuff you wouldn't or haven't done, which they will respect.

I love this & totally agree!! I feel like we should be working just as hard as our kids because it’s the work we chose—to educate & support young people on their way to adulthood!

I agree stay away from gossip… I never eat lunch in the teacher’s lounge ✔️

like

I don't like eating in there either because even though I don't want to be part if gossip, others are doing that same thing with loud voices. I really dislike that. It's either eat in the teachers' lounge and wear earplugs or eat in my classroom. 😁

Even perfectionists make mistakes.

like

1- know your job (what are you teaching)
2- listen to students and have lots of patience

like

Always be yourself because if you’re not the kids will know (& it will not go well).

like

Nothing that you learned in teacher school works.

Focus on learning in community w/relationships (all other content, standards goals/objectives are embedded (in my own words).

like

Regarding rules and classroom management--ask the students what your rules and consequences should be. They know what is expected and will be way harder on themselves than you would be. Plus they will buy into it more because they were part of the discussion.

My previous landlord is requiring me to get a form notarized stating I no longer live in my previous unit and that I have moved out. They won’t give me my security deposit unless it’s notarized despite me being moved out of the unit completely, and my keys have already been surrendered. The lease doesn’t state this form is required. Anyone else experience this before?

W/O getting into specifics, I tried to do something nice, which involved telling a lie, and then got sort-of caught, but then lied again to cover my ass, and it’s spiraled out of control and now I don’t know what to do. Obviously I need to come clean, but I just really, really f’ed up and am freaking out. I’ll be retiring from a public school system in the next 3-5 years. My husband, a Navy vet, and I are tossing around the idea of then relocating to a country that has a military base nearby. We’d both be interested in at least part-time gigs: me as a teacher preferably on base and he’s open to jobs on or off base. Does anyone know any educators currently doing that or planning to??
