Southern Marin: Tiburon/Belvedere/Mill Valley
Incredible schools, most beautiful surroundings, quick (and beautiful) drive to SF over GGB (or ferry); equidistant to two airports SFO and OAK
I’d go to Orinda or Lafayette
I grew up in that area. Lots of absentee parents. Would not recommend unless you want your kids associating with a bunch of mediocre, out of touch kids.
It really depends on your job (location, situation - do you need to be in the office 5x/week, compensation, etc). There are family friendly places throughout the Bay Area and a number have been mentioned already. Commutes are 'reasonable' right now but will likely get worse once more people start moving back and/or returning to the office F/T. If you want to buy, try and buy the dips which are short-lived and tend to be highly correlated to the stock market - 2001-02, 2009-10, though not in 2020). You may also consider the following trade-off: purchasing a lower priced home/private school or higher priced home/public school. Example of former: Hayward Hills, parts of Castro Valley, San Leandro and the Oakland Hills. Example of the latter: Pleasanton, Danville, Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga. These examples are in the East Bay. You could find more examples around San Jose/South Bay, on the Peninsula and maybe in Marin and the North Bay.
Kentfield / Mill Valley or Portola Valley
I currently live in San Jose (not near downtown) and our area seems good for kids/families. I'm also new so take my opinion with a grain of salt
Sunnyvale and Campbell looked nice too
Sunnyvale schools are not the best for the price paid for housing. Campbell is better
Belvedere Tiburon
If you can afford it - Marin is amazing
I live in Novato. Love it! No fog and no crowds. “If you can afford it”, same goes for the entire bay area
Southern Marin is wonderful
Texas 🤪
Noe Valley
Richmond/sunset districts
Not really. Although I have a bias towards sunset since it’s closer to 280S
Peninsula, trivalley area or Los Gatos/Almaden. Sf is not family friendly especially with the lottery system for their public schools. IMO. Personally chose San Carlos
West of Twin Peaks in SF
Also optimizing for warmest climate- so, east bay?
Definitely East Bay for warmest climate. Further in-land = warmer. Also, micro-climates are a real thing. Here is an example: three years ago child had a soccer tournament in SF (literally the city) on Memorial Day Weekend. When we left the field, temperature in SF was 63F at 1pm. Arrived in Livermore At 2pm, temperature was 93F. You will spend money on A/C in parts of the East Bay.
Depending on where you settle, you may want to invest in a small generator for the PSPS events (power company turns off the grid in certain areas during red flag warnings - high chance of wild fires). You could also rewire your Tesla to power your fridge but that information is probably for another bowl.🤣
OP, what’s your budget and needs?
Roth bay is beautiful and close to everything. I live in Novato. Love it
Palo Alto or Saratoga if you can afford it. Fremont or San Jose if you’re budget conscious.
Woodside isn’t too shabby.
