Accounts if you crave power over the whole enchilada. Creative if you’re a glutton for punishment and have the patience for the delayed gratification of awards convincing everyone you’re worthy. Strategy if you have an accent and want to lord over creative to fulfill your dashed dreams of not being one. Media if you want any sense of power and stability- albeit waning.
Creatives that
(a) haven’t worked with a good strategist, or
(b) don’t feel secure enough to have people feed in on ideas (with builds or amends)
do feel that way, yeah.
Wow. A lot of jaded answers here. And I’m sorry some of you feel that way about the industry.
I think anyone can make their job exciting and rewarding. The former CMO of Bank of America, Anne Finucane, started her career as a producer at Hill Holiday. How crazy is that! If you believe and able to find joy in what you do, you’ll find growth and reward to anything that you do. Sure there will be bad days but it’s the journey that counts.
I know this sounds like a happy-go-lucky statement, but what’s the alternative? Be jaded like the some of these people? No thanks. I choose to be happy.
There is no best ‘gig’. Advertising is a pointless distraction. Awards mean nothing to anyone you care about. Now, get to work.
Somewhere in the distant darkness......
a VP/CCO's ego......
their false sense of confidence.....
built on the stockpile of awards they've acculumlated off of others......
has been shattered.
Probably client
Accounts is not exciting, nor do you get credit or recognition but I do believe it has one of the best paths to senior leadership.
Whether you find it rewarding or not depends on if you’re weird like me
Because you own the client relationship, and because you’re responsible for the business internally. If you can maintain and grow your accounts, it’s a pretty fast path to rise.
I find it rewarding because of those things above. Plus I love working in a creative environment
I love being a producer. You get to create, problem solve, be creative, and work with everyone.

New Business. The highs are very high and while the lows are a bummer, you get exposure to the entire organization. If successful, it’s a quick path to the top.
Creatives for recognition - most award shows are meant for them. Account management for senior leadership. Media for internal recognition for contributing to the bottom line.
But if you are a rainmaker, then you get all of the above.
Strategy if you are a problem solver and like to consider many points of view and put puzzles together that can help teams think about things in new ways. We may not get the credit but if you are good and enjoy digging for insight and coming up with points of view or thinking about what brands can do in the world it can be it’s own reward. You have some shield at times from some of the hassles of account management. Doesn’t mean other depts don’t think about those things but that’s our job.
Media
The perks.
I love being a creative. When it comes down to it, the agency only exists because of what we do
When you’re a creative you get paid the most and you get the most recognition. You also get to leave the office for weeks at a time for shoots. On the flip side you probably work the most hours.
Media is a snoozefest but some of the events I've been to were amazing. The free stuff almost makes up for how frustrating the job is.
When you are in account management you control the money and the client relationship
