This is a good article: https://wornandwound.com/finally-an-affordable-true-gmt-hits-the-market/
It talks about True GMTs, and why that might make a difference to you. I don’t love the Moro but it’s an good read.
Monta makes an awesome watch (I’ve owned 2), but their Skyquest isn’t a True GMT (which might not matter to you). For my money, I’d be looking for a pre-owned Grand Seiko Quartz GMT with the Explorer II bezel (https://www.ablogtowatch.com/grand-seiko-9f-quartz-gmt-watches-featuring-the-first-ever-9f-quartz-gmt-caliber/).
Those things are freakin awesome. And while some will bemoan the fact that they’re quartz, they’re some of the best quartz ever built and you avoid some headaches, like resetting the watch if the power reserve runs out. I’d opt for this beautiful blue dial:

I think you should go with a mechanical watch. I'm assuming you already have a quartz watch (or owned one in the past) and a $1.5k is a big enough budget to go above the Seiko range (which I love btw) and get something really cool. Nothing wrong with Quartz, but I enjoy interacting and setting the automatics/mechanicals more
Monta Skyquest is an example of something I’m interested in, if that helps.
Thanks for the heads up P1, just learned the difference this evening. Trying to determine if it’s something I’d sacrifice being in love with the design for. Leaning towards yes but it’s a tough decision!

Since you mentioned Monta, I'm going to suggest two microbrand options - Farer (the Lander with Sea Foam Green Dial) and Baltic (they just came out with a new Aquascaphe GMT). I believe both are right around $1,500
Farer has a few other GMT watches. I have their Maze GMT and I love it.
