What’s the best indirect route into Strategy? If you had to choose between Accounts or a Kantar-type brand research consultancy?

Kantar, dude. Cmon.

like

Research consultancy I’d say if you’re more abstractly interested in strat and not deadset on where you’ll end up (client side, consultancy, ad agency, start up product development etc)..or account if you just want to do ads and know the agency world better/exclusively

like

As someone who hires strategists, take the Research route. Account will teach you the business and how to manage situations and clients, but the consultancy will help develop a point of view that I have found much more valuable in my team members.

like

Speaking as someone who started out on the account side, go the kantar route. My previous experience has been valuable especially as I get higher up into management, but the research piece is a more immediately beneficial foundation that will help you shape a more differentiating point of view faster.

like

Whoa there. I do have to disagree with all of the above. Rather than trying to chase a certain discipline or a title I think it’s more important to find what do you think you’re more interested in and where your strengths lie. You might be certain that you want to be in brand strategy now but working through account or research might find that you have a passion for one of those areas instead. Do what you like and want you want to work on rather than just focusing on how it will get you to a place that you may not want to go.

that makes sense, cheers for that. who would you rather hire to a planner/junior planner position?

lots of wisdom 👆🏽. of course i have a bias, because my career has been spent floating a bit. I started in account management, transitioned to lifestyle/experiential practice, then did business development, eventually decided to get an MBA and that took me to strategy. Pursue things that you think you may be able to both make a substantive contribution as well as learn. Pursue things that are genuinely motivating and intriguing and have a little faith that when the time is right you will know what to do.

kantar.

can’t tell if sarcastic - is that a neg or positive for Kantar??

@Grey1, how has the MBA helped you in strategy relative to peers who came up through the ranks, went to VCU BrandCenter etc?

Good morning!

Still trying to figure out this whole Fishbowl thing, so here goes my first post.

I would love to get into provider credentialing, but all employers I've looked at want at least 3 years of experience. So, I'm looking at Provider Network Coordinator roles, because I'm finding some of those roles don't need AS MUCH experience. I'm a RHIT, and have been working in healthcare for nearly 10 years.

Any input on employers is appreciated!

Without giving away too much detail, I’ve been managing a project for months that’s visible to the company. I’ve loved doing it. Have learned a lot, given license to plan a lot of it without much oversight and have been told what a great job I’ve done.
Then awhile back new management comes in who wants to put their stamp on it, change it up. Fine, I expected that. (Note, these folks are NOT my managers; my manager is more senior but these folks do not report to my manager).
