What’s the best thing for a new associate to do to get on billable work? I was mapped to an industry I have no experience in; how do I start gaining experience when I don’t have the experience to get on these projects?

Network. Get to know your senior leaders. Be curious about what they do and sell yourself that you’re willing to jump into anything to learn, even if that means doing the most mundane tasks. You’ve got to pay your dues and most importantly....be billable. Stay close with those folks plus your resource / staffing manager who is charged with getting you on a project. Stay relevant.

To add, if you’re relatively junior in your career (sounds like you are as you’ve suggested), everyone has the expectation that you will have limited skills. You were hired to support the company in some way or capacity....so stay aware of the projects in your team’s pipeline.

Switching consulting agencies atm. Currently I earn way below average at 42k€/p.a + car. Next week I am negotiating with another company wanting to employ me. I am actually bringing in a customer with a fixed 2 year project @ 1000€ all-in/day rate (5 billable days/week). What salary should I aim for - and what bonuses? I would love something around the market average of 65-75k is it realistic even though I am in my mid 20s?

When we’re all comparing/complaining about hours at the end of the year are we including pro bono hours in that total? I’m nearing 2050 billables for the year but I have another 500 pro bono hours that should be added on. At the same time, I keep hearing about all these people straight billing 2,400+. Trying to determine if I should’ve tried to pick up more billable work to stay in the middle of the pack (i.e. not interested in partnership, just trying not to get canned).

I’m thankfully hitting my hours, but my firm keeps passing non-billable work my way. I am grateful for the opportunities, but this type of work always seems to find its way to the female associates at my firm. We have been told that non-billable work is irrelevant in terms of our annual hours. Any tips on how to navigate this in a thoughtful way? I want to be a team-player, but I believe that others need to step up to the plate.

Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...

Is there typically a grace period to get billable requirements met when starting at a new firm? I started the first week of May. I'm about 90 hours short of a 170 requirement for the month. I have work, but it's big file review type stuff that takes a lot of actual time. Should I be sending out resumes, or killing myself to get these hours in by the 31st? I'm not a new lawyer, but am new to this practice area. They poached me from my last firm.

I work full time in a (foreign) country where employees are protected pretty well. Our agency lost clients and they need to lay people off. I’m on that list too. They are convincing us to accept a voluntary resignation with 5 months of salary. I can refuse (law will protect me) and stay on but I have barely any billable work to do and of course this will create some toxic relationships with management. (CONT)

I’m an incoming AC1 at Bain and I have spent the summer studying a bit for the GMAT since we had a stipend. I took it with no practice and received a 640. After studying on an off for a couple of months I received a 690. I’m likely going to cancel the score since I realize it isn’t enough for M7. To provide some more insight on my profile. I graduated undergrad from UofM BBA Magna Cum Laude, have interned in Big 4 consulting, IB, and VC, and I’m an Asian-American. What should I do?
