What’s the best way to return to law after taking a much needed break from it? I became seriously burnt out and was able to take some time away from working but now it is time for me to renter the workforce. Unsure how to approach this on resume, in cover letters, interviews, etc.

Agreed

Bring in a position where I hire lawyers I appreciate honesty. It makes me think you will be honest and up front if I hire you. “I was burnt out, the pandemic offered me an opportunity to step back, take a break, make sure practicing law was my future and after (insert what you did) I realized I love this and am excited to get back to it. “. I will want to know 4 things, why you left, what you did, why you came back and that you are committed to staying.

Also I go the most fruitful job opportunities/interviews via former co-counsel during my year in practice and law school classmates.

Getting the resume and cover letter right is 🔑. Feel free to dm me. It basically depends on (a) how long the break was and (b) the nature of your experience prior to the break. In this market, you could probably find something better suited to your lifestyle and avoid future burnout.

Just apply to jobs and have a good answer when you’re asked during interviews. I took a few years off (to raise kids) and got an in house position pretty quickly once I started applying. You don’t need to do anything different to your resume. The gap will be obvious, but there’s no need to call it out before you get an interview. Now is a great time to be job hunting.

It will be a sort of role-play demo session, where the team will want to understand how I present, how I manage a room, how I keep my audience engaged and also your technical abilities when asked regarding the solution. When your firm requires billable hours, how are they calculated? Actual vs realized (I.e. what you put on your billing sheet vs what is billed to the client). Does your firm differentiate? Which number do they go by? My mind is somehow not comprehending how some big law hours are under my small firm requirement?

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know.
