Some college professors can sometimes talk in idealistic terms or focus on theory. We SHOULD be able to act ethically as journalists, but that doesn't pay the bills
My news professor was pretty honest about the industry. “You’re probably not going to make a lot of money” “you’re probably going to start out on a terrible shift” etc. film professor lied in terms of how important it was to learn stuff in school. Can learn more in a year of working than 4 years of school
As I grew older I realized that I was faced with a choice. I could stick to my beliefs and die knowing I had the moral high ground, or I can be a bit of a sellout and provide a quality life for me and my family. I chose the latter
My professors would all talk about how important their classes were, and how I would be grateful for having a broader education. That was a lie.
When I was studying to be a journalist in my beginnings, they told me that the business was in the media, nothing could be further from the truth.
During my studies several times I was told that journalists, when they started working, were exploited, could go to larger farms in the place where they worked and complain about the treatment, everything is false if you complain you are fired.
It happened to me, the issue of ethics happened to me, basically, they send you to cover a story that despite having the scoop, the truth is not always told in order not to affect the interests of certain people. It is very crazy that we demand objectivity and transparency from politicians, for example, and we are the main branch of corruption.
I found a lot of professors were excellent at making their non-existent work history sound like they had single-handedly changed the industry. The biggest truth I learned is that inflated egos will be a part of my life in the field.
Those that can't, teach..
