I am a 🇨🇦. Was in the US on H1B. I moved from US to Canada taking a 20% pay cut. What I got in return was my freedom, better social benefits, great work life balance.
A1 - Yes I did, with all my sanity. I don't expect you to empathize. H1B used to be the most sought after visa and pathway to legal immigration but it has lost its luster after Trump took over. He has made all his attempts to leave us with two options - bonded slavery or GTFO of US. Hope you accept this fact.
I am not 🇨🇦 but moved to Canada for my daughter. Took a 22% pay cut and pay higher taxes. No more travel, more time with kid. totally worth it.
Just took 10% cut to go do something I'm passionate about in the social impact space.
Will tell you if it was worth it in another few months, but the way I see it is that the longer I stay where I am now, the tighter the golden handcuffs will become. In a few more years the opportunity cost of leaving will be even higher, and I'm not sure I trust myself to make the jump at that point.
Got a 30% paycut to go to a cool role at a super cool company. I don't have any regrets now, but I came back to consulting two years later.
Was months away from a promotion at boutique firm that would have provided +40% comp bump but then made a lateral move title wise where new total comp was equivalent to where I was pre-promotion. So, left some money on table but glad I made the jump. Have been enjoying new environment.
What role are you now at McK?
40% pay cut to join KPMG. I switched careers with little experience transferring to my new field. The upside is that higher salary was the peak of my previous industry and would eventually decline. So win-win for me.
Left a job to take a 10% take home paycut along with less benefits to switch careers into something I was interested in and to move to a city that I wanted to live at. In the grand scheme of things, I think I will end up farther ahead this way.
