Small firm. I have a very brief meeting with the managing partners the week before Christmas and they tell me what my salary will be the following year and what my bonus is. I’ll report back next week lol.

Justify your number with your billing rate, your billing quota, and the multiplier. All are negotiable, assuming you've made your boss's life easier.

correction: I saw another post below. Lockstep places are definitely more set in stone, but you can still try to go for bonuses.

All depends on where you work. If at a medium or large firm and an associate, salary is commonly lockstep by class year with yearly raises and bonus increases. If at a small firm, compensation is highly variable and not uncommonly tied to the success of the practice. And in either case partnership compensation is impossible to describe in a couple sentences.

If in federal government, GS 12-15. If in-house at a company, it varies quite a bit but generally promotions are relatively infrequent and raises are just to keep abreast with inflation.

All of this is to say your path can take so many different directions and it’s hard to have a straightforward answer to your question.

See Associate 1's response. My Small firm (i.e. less than 10 lawyers) is very different than an AM Law 100, different from Government GS scale, and more advantageous than most insurance defense firms. So... more details please.

We always get an annual raise to keep up with COL and seniority, plus this year we got two additional COL raises. In Feb we are told what our bonus will be.

Mid-sized Canadian firm. We have lockstep bonuses based on year call. This year, raises are significant to compensate for the level of competition over junior associates (2-5 year call)

Feeling very down about starting a family. My husband is finally excited about it, but I am terrified. Nobody in my area can find reliable childcare, and we can’t easily afford a nanny (I took a pay cut going in-house, and he has a non-profit salary). We could probably swing a nanny if we didn’t save for retirement for a few years, but I’m not sure that is the smartest move. Has anyone else felt this burden during covid with all the childcare problems? We have family help, but not full time.

Recently started an in-house counsel position for a company based in WA, with offices also in CA. I’m licensed in CA and will work remote from OR. I’ve been trying to figure out if I need to be admitted (for in-house counsel only) in WA or if my CA license is enough. Anyone have any tips? Should I be concerned I started my new job (just weeks ago) before getting this all sorted out or do most states have a grace period?

Mid term career direction: due to connections I know of an ID firm with an actually good reputation that is planning to open an office in my market within the next year. That looks good professionally right?

It will be a zoom interview, so I can hide the pregnancy, but I'm not even sure if that's the best route. Help me figure out my life, please! 😁
