I’m a creativity researcher working on my dissertation on the psychology & neuroscience of creativity. I’m interested in understanding how different types of creative careers, side hustles, and artistic outlets relate to our emotions, mental health, & well-being. Ultimately to help build awareness, resources, & improve the lives of creative people.

Anyone working remote in a foreign country?
I see no issues with tattoos in the workplace no matter what your profession is. Your tattoos do not mean you are terrible at your job and shouldn't be looked at in that manner either.
I think it’s a non issue. It may depend geographically but here in So Cal I have seen plenty of tattoos.
My personal view: If having the tattoo brings you joy and makes you more 'you', go for it. Always good to check if there is a written policy against it (if there is, ask HR if it was last reviewed in 1980. If yes, ask for a refresh and work with them to bring it up to relevance). You appear to be going about this the best way - by being considerate and thinking of all scenarios. Trust your gut and live your best self.
A job can be temporary, even ending with 2 weeks' notice when the employer chooses to end the relationship. A tattoo is way more permanent, and your choice.
I personally am impatient for legacy industries such as ours to change. We are losing a lot of talented professionals to other industries because insurance is too slow to keep up with the times. Those who use the lack of tattoos as a visual/superficial indicator of trust and professionalism have larger problems that go beyond you.
Cheers.
Not uncommon from what I’ve seen. As you said, wear a long sleeve and you’re good
It's 2022 and pretty much accepted all over SoFla, I think that issue went away in the early 2000s. Even Publix our local Southern grocery store allows open Tats now.
I’m a dinosaur, but I think they should be covered. I don’t care to see them because tats= trashy to me.
Pro
I can only speak for myself, so here goes: it isn't an attack on any individual but a call-out of opinions that are frankly biased. Everyone has my utmost respect, however, they should hopefully be open to criticism if their opinions are harmful to other professionals and their career paths. As a visible minority with a non-North American accent and short stature, I have seen how first impressions hold me back professionally. All I ask is that everyone be given a chance because, honestly, that's the least they deserve.
I think as long as they are covered up, not on your face or neck, you’re ok. You can always check out your employee hand book.
I think it’s fine, my workplace has employees with tattoos, unnatural hair (myself included), etc. and it’s never been an issue.
It's a non issue at SF. I wouldn't feel the need to cover it up in general either. Other than dress for your day ..a certain audience I would suggest to wear long sleeves so not distracting from a presentation/meeting. Otherwise I've seen it all.
I haven't seen anyone with tattoos. It seems quite uncommon. I work in NYC. We mostly wear business casual clothing.
I think it depends on the leader for the most part but in my area, it isn't an issue.
Agree with this!!
From what I’ve seen and heard, as long as they are covered no one cares. If your shirt rolls up and someone briefly sees it then it’s fine but most companies seem to want them to be covered for the most part.
Not an issue. Actually brings up good conversation starters when they do show. This is becoming more regular
I would say that is by discretion. I have sleeves and a tattoo on my hand, but I maintain the work dress code which is usually business causal in the office. I try not to advertise them, but if I am warm I won’t shy from wearing a short sleeve at my desk. I don’t see it as a big issue once in the work force, and even Manulife adds have been presenting people with tattoo sleeves in them. I would say use discretion with the tattoos depending on their theme and whether it’s work friendly, and try not to flaunt and advertise them, and maintain the requested work dress.
Non issue unless they're outrageous.
Not an issue at all at corporate - our regional offices/hubs are even more casual. Assuming there’s nothing offensive, obviously - any kind of hate symbols etc aren’t likely to be tolerated. Our culture is definitely “dress for your day”.
I have a wrist tattoo, and mostly I keep it covered, but it does show sometimes. I am still employed and no one seems to have suffered any adverse reactions from seeing it

I see no issue with this. It’s pretty acceptable where ever you are now days.
Non-issue in my opinion. My favorite co-worker had tattoos and she was phenomenal at her job. If you’re concerned they do make a foundation makeup that covers tattoos so you could cover what may show.
