What’s the correlation between compensation & happiness? I have never been a very happy person (depressed from time to time) and my comp is only 150k. What compensation do I need to reach so that I can become immediately happy? 200k, 300k, 500k?

I was not happy when I was making 150K . I am not sure if it was money or something - but I certainly was not happy . I think it was partly because I knew I was not fairly paid . Somewhere along the way - probably when I crossed 500K or so - I was still not totally happy but I also knew clearly that money was not going to change happiness for better Further along the way I found happiness helping others grow , spending more time with family , getting back to my interest in music and so on . I lost all interest in competing with other people . Not only did happiness increase , I started making more money too Net learning - there is some point till which money influences happiness and it could be different for all of us . But that’s not a high mark . I think it was 500K for me - but it might very well have been 300K . I can’t say anymore looking back . All I can say is that at some point I stopped thinking about it as a primary concern and life became happier

The money isn't necessarily what's holding you back. It's knowing what makes you happy. Does a shit ton of money in your bank make you genuinely happy? Then yes, go make $600k, or $1M/yr. But be honest with yourself... what would that money afford you, that really is the source of that happiness? Ask yourself that age old high school counselor question - If you never had to worry about money, had endless amounts or you won the lottery and were a billionaire... what would you do? Do that for a job and you'll be happy. Would you travel? Then find a way to travel more. Would you buy a fancy car? Then find time to play with cars. Would you hang out in Vegas all the time? Move to Vegas. The money is how you manifest the thing that makes you happy, it's not what is actually making you happy. For me? Travel. Good food. My dogs. These things make me HAPPY... so I make enough, and am smart enough with the money I make, to be able to have those things. I cook at home and eat better than most restaurants I know. My dogs have healthcare plans and a CC dedicated to any needs they have, and I spend all of my non-work time (and some of my work time) around them. And Travel? I bought an RV and live in it so ... I relocate about 6-10 times a year and have found the places in the country I love to live (Vegas, Seattle, Wyoming), and the places I don't ever need to go back to (lookin' at you Ohio and Buffalo). I work from 'home' like everyone else, and I just found a way to change what my front yard is every few months - and never have bad weather or shitty neighbors to deal with for very long ;) I make about $180k and I'm doing all of the things that make me happy, in all of the places I live through out the year, and saving a lot more money now than ever in my life for future plans too. I could chase more money, but I give up the time to do and enjoy the things that actually do make me happy in doing so.

I was my happiest as a single new guy at Andersen Consulting making $22.5K in 1989. Twice monthly paychecks of $700.... A couple of years ago I made $5M in one year, didn’t matter as much as that $22.5K did back then. It’s not a number, you have to be happy with yourself.

“Only 150k” 🙄 Why is everyone on this app so out of touch with the rest of the world.

likefunnysmart

People aren’t out of touch. We’re on an app in which saying that 150k is not the max of a very possible much higher income ceiling is universally understood. Uncram your self righteousness from its self righteous spot.

Peaks at 90k. Then stagnates for the next $4-500k or so, then you start getting into beach house territory

You think you need to earn $500K to start thinking about a beach house? Huh?

The more money you’ll gain, the more stuff you’ll loose in between ... Unless you’ll win the lottery, money is linked with time, and by the time you’ll reach that target salary, more wrinkles would be drawn on your face, your hair would turn grey, your health would not be what it used to be, you’d gain weight, you’d loose muscles etc So forget about your target salary to feel happy. Live the moment, enjoy your youth, celebrate when you are safe and healthy and stop worrying about the money ...

“What’s the relationship between goats and Toaster quality? And how many goats do I need to have a top tier toaster? 20? 30?”

Flip it. Goats exploded in value in the open market and are now worth more than toasters. The Federal Reserve printed too many toasters if you ask me.

What I have learned is you never get what you deserve but what you negotiate for. Your at the peak of your negotiation powers before you accept an offer. Make sure you are upskilling continuously so you can attract multiple offers to get the leverage you need to make more.

You need to hack your life so it fills you with joy: this usually means, liking where you live and having access to activities you enjoy (e.g Colorado skiing, california hikes etc), spending more time with people you care for, and enjoying the day to day of your work. The money isn’t really the thing.

Look up “hedonic adaptation.” Tl;dr – an increase in compensation will likely only make you happy for a short period of time as most of us have a fixed happiness point with fluctuations. To raise this level you have to work on yourself. You’re depressed for other reasons than salary. I encourage you to address those instead of thinking a salary raise is a magic bullet.

like

If you have the basic necessities, there is no amount of money, things, achievements, etc. that will make you happy. You will continue chasing things hoping for happiness and thinking “when I have X I will be happy”. That includes a significant other btw. So many people expect their significant other to make them happy. That’s not how it works. Work on yourself, as others have pointed out perhaps therapy, and perhaps God (come, ye who are thirsty).

Your happiness is truly independent of your net worth, title, achievements etc. Happiness is not tomorrow or yesterday, but here and now, and within you. You can decide to be happy and blissful at this very moment by looking within and connecting with your true spiritual essence. As crazy as it sounds, we are not in this world to rack up diplomas, climb a corporate ladder, and receive praise and recognition by others.... that being said, see money as resource that allows you get that you actually *need* for your life on this earth. The exact amount varies widely, but it is generally way below 100k, especially once you truly connect with your inner being and distinguish between what you truly need vs you think you need vs what others tell you that you need vs what other think you should need....
