What’s the difference between a staff attorney and an associate in terms of how they’re viewed by the firm and other firms in the industry?

Staff attorneys are seen very differently at all firms. They are attorneys but they typically are seen as lacking the reasoning skills to be partnership track and are given more rote work, as mentioned above. For example, it may often be e-discovery work for litigation. Their pay is commensurately lower but they are very profitable for a firm.

At least at my firm staff attorneys are administrative on the transactional side (running lien searches, checking UCC-1 forms properly filled out) and are essentially doc reviewers on the lit side. My guess is thats the norm (my first firm, v50, was the same way) so its known that you aren’t involved with the meat of the transaction or litigation

Associates are generally on a partnership track, while staff attorneys are not. Staff attorneys also tend to make less. I’m guessing that because staff attorneys are not on a partnership track and make less, the expectations of them putting their whole life into the job are also a bit lower.

My firm also has a position that’s called something like “career attorney.” This seems to be for someone who was on partner track and needed to scale back for whatever reason. I have seen people go from partner track to career attorney and back to partner track; one had young kids, one had long term medical issues, for example. We also have staff attorneys that are as others described; I initially confused these two titles but they are mot the same.

We have “case attorneys” who are super helpful with admin, filings, etc. and because they’re so involved with all of that they know everything about how judges respond to certain things. They’re absolutely indispensable to our team

Can anyone recommend some small or mid-sized law firms in NYC that are reputable and could make for a good lateral opportunity for a second-year M&A associate who enjoys working at a law firm but wants to get away from constant 70-100 hour weeks? I’m happy to work hard, but staffing shortages at my Big Law firm have run me into the ground and I’m ready for a change.

2017 grad so technically a 4th year. Lateraled to a CRE boutique in NYC that’s a major player. Learned quickly that my experience/knowledge/organization is not up to par (was a COG in the machine at prior firm). Just had EOY review and, though positive sounding, they’re dropping me to a 3rd year to ensure I’m not billing as a 4th year and able to do the work to learn/get up to par. I feel pretty okay about it (market salary deduction notwithstanding), but want to make sure I’m not being naive.
