In simple terms, for M&A in IB you act as an advisor for a company looking to sell a company mainly. PE is the “buy-side,” you are an actual “investor” looking to buy a company to add to your private equity group’s portfolio
@OP the reason is the skills gained in IB is easily transferrable to PE, transaction/deal experience, pitching, financial modeling. Plus they know you can work the 70-80 hr week grinds consistently. That way PE doesn’t have to train you from the ground up. It’s starting to become more common for PE to recruit straight out of undergrad for analyst instead of doing 2 yrs in IB and coming into PE as an associate.
