What’s the difference between strategic finance and corporate finance? Some job postings make it seem like they’re the exact same.

Varies from firm to firm. Corporate finance is generally your typical FP&A role. Building monthly and ad hop reports. And usually reports to a manger who reports to the CFO. Strategy is much more open ended and much more enjoyable (in my opinion) Lots of industry research and competitive analysis to build investment strategies and other big picture projects. A lot of firms don’t really know the difference so it’s important to know what you want to do and ask the right questions so you can figure out what the role your interviewing for actually is

This is helpful, thanks!

Spent 2 years in finance at a F5, and the way it was defined was: FP&A is pure corporate finance (data, reporting, etc) and strategic finance was the more special projects/ad hoc analysis (eg, post acquisition analysis, recommendations based) side. Strategic finance doesnt get as white space as corporate strategy tho. Both reporting lines are to the CFO at the end of the day.

As someone actively interviewing, a lot of newer tech companies have been calling their FP&A roles "strategic finance". This can vary greatly so just make sure you know what you're getting into.

What about the salary range for a strategic finance senior associate? The company is in LA and I would be working remote in another state close by.

How do you switch over to strategic finance from being in corporate finance? What types of roles would you look for?

There’s post MBA hires but I saw a ton of fluidity. Depending on company culture, you can start in one and move around a bit depending on your goals etc. People usually seek promotions around every 2 years and that’s when you switch around. At the top (VP/SVP level), folks had done strategic finance and FPA roles over the course of their careers.

I just joined a new organization (>2B in rev) in their FP&A team and they are merged with the M&A/special project team while also having a corporate finance team separate that is responsible of accounting cycle/reporting - so it really depends of where you are going

All- I have some friends who work at Bain and the more I hear about the place, the more I want to eventually work there. The issue is that my credentials aren’t the best. I will have an MBA from a T15 college in about 2 years time, I have 6 years of experience in analytics consulting, mostly at small firms and startups. I guess I wanted to ask the golden question, do I really have a chance at getting into Bain? If so, how should I plan this out?
