At Amazon, what is the difference between a Program Manager and Technical Program Manager? It looks like the Technical one gets paid about 25% more but not sure what roles/responsibilities they do differently. Amazon
Also how technical a background does someone need for a Technical Program Manager role?

McKinsey & Company McKinsey Implementation 🐠: do implementation consultants specialize in industries? Or develop a specific focus over time? I'm joining the MI practice, and wanted to understand if I need to tailor my experience. Are there industries that tend to be over subscribed? Lastly, are there any pros/cons to just doing implementation (as opposed to strategy) studies? Thank you for taking the time.

For most roles? Likely not as big as you’d think, however I do think that MBB May help get you access to roles you may not have at B4 in certain industries (e.g., top tier hedge funds, IB, PE)
And to be clear, I think we’re all talking about deal team/investing roles at PE firms, not Ops/Portfolio roles. The answer is a bit different for Ops
Probably somewhere in between (the gap exists but is not as large as one thinks). Note: this is an opinion based on limited data
Considering that most exits happen at M/early SM levels, the opportunities at least in big tech are comparable across MBB and B4. You will get an equal shot at interviewing for all the good roles provided you have done a reasonably healthy mix of projects across strategy, analytics, and operations. Trick is to avoid ultra long term implementation projects as they don’t add any new dimension to your resume. Once you make it to interviews, it’s in your control. Having said that, exit to PE/VC is almost non existent in B4 and that’s an area where MBB has an advantage.
Agree with this. We are quite hamstrung by long, boring implementation work
It comes down to your experience and how valuable your next employer things it will be. At the end of the day MBB is drastically more focused on certain types of projects whereas the Big 4 have more diverse works streams. So ya, if you averaged it out per company the gap will look huge, but if you focused on Big 4 individuals doing similar work to MBB, then the gap probably isn't that big.
MBB does shorter, more strategic work for higher level clients vs B4 when they’re at the same client. For example, on a recent M&A case my MBB firm was running the Integration Mgmt Office and Clean Team with regular C-level interaction while a B4 was working on integrating the IT systems for the two companies
I think it’s based off the work experience itself? Example: Pmo work for random clients vs valuations for PE?
I spoke with a recruiter that previously worked at McKinsey. His opinion was that industry looked at B4 consultants and mbb relatively the same, think top 10 mba programs. this changes as one goes up in the firm. I believe more csuite from MBB in roles outside CAO (since b4 are also audit firms) not sure how CFO is split. The only other difference is if you’re going to a Corp strategy role MBB has the clear advantage. For PE/IB, I don’t think any of the b4 firms actually do relevant work. Any due diligence or strategic work is looked at by PE
/IB guys as accountants helping tie out the numbers or accountants helping me enhance processes. Exit opps for CorpStrategy and Strategic roles easier from MBB and more senior management roles if you stay longer, exit opps b4 more finance and accounting related. Either can make the jump to PE/IB but both harder from a b4.
PwC1 and M1. I did a PE internship and have a few friends in PE I’m just passing along what I heard. In general though, even those groups would have difficulties getting into a PE role. My understanding is For a PE role it goes IB>MBB Strategy>Corp Strategy>B4 (usually after MBA).
