I've moved across the country a couple of times at this point. Meet ups and city sports leagues are the best. And get a dog if you want. Dog parks are a great place to meet people. As far as rushing home after work goes, dog walkers and daycares exist. Your social life will be fine 🙄
I've made friends at the gym and another fitness class by just casually striking up a conversation with people. It makes me wanna puke, but it's worth it! I also have done what UX D2 recommends and can attest to it working.
I think the key thing is getting out into situations where there are strangers, being open, and bucking up the guts to say hello. All way easier said then done if you have social anxiety like myself, but definitely the way to do it.
Making friends as an adult sucks
Most of my friends are dogs.
I struggle without moving. No friends. Just a few.
Dating is even harder than making friends!
Date someone who's from there and befriend their friends.
Don't get a dog. You always have to go home right after work to let them shit. You'll miss out on any impromptu gatherings.
I'm just going to quietly lurk here and hope someone knows the answer.
No way you can order up a date from your toilet. Friends are harder.
I met my closest friends at church but I know I'm not the norm 🤓
I just moved and have hung out with friends of friends but I don't have close friends yet. Meetups are the best way to find people with similar interests. It's definitely been hard at times, but it has forced me to get out of my comfort zone which was why I wanted to move in the first place.
Disagree with the person who said don't get a dog. Example, I took my dog out to pee and met a mom and daughter in my building. The daughter played with the dog while I hung out with the mom, now we're homies. Probably wouldn't have talked to them otherwise.
I've made my best friends as an adult. Meet other transplants. Ask people questions. Set coffee dates. Make effort. Go to networking events and meet ups. There are tons for creatives! Be interested in what ppl are working on. Get to know their parents' names, then ask- how's Judy. People remember you for remembering. Send memes and gifs - make ppl laugh.
I'm in Boston too if you ever wanna hang, what team are you on? There are lots of Digitas people that hangout
Go out to eat alone and befriend the person next to you eating alone at the bar
I haven't moved, but I'm married and need new friends. The few old ones have either moved away or don't live close by. Tried the Meetup thing once and met an amazing group of folks, but we haven't hung out again since then...
Taking classes (music, cooking, language) is great for lots of reasons, but for the purposes of your question, you're all gong through the same struggle together, which naturally binds people. Avoid fitness classes because those tends to favor looks over mettle.
Literally ever single one of my good friends I've made since college has moved away. I'm in serious need of new ones. My bf is like, go make new friends, give me some space. Oops.
If anyone in LA wants to hang let me know!
