Second class to trad consultants, underpaid compared to tech, not true product management

Well I kind of figure anything not in the core ladder is kind of “second class” comparatively speaking. But good to know.
A1 hit it on the head. I’m a PM now at a midsize startup (~150 people) and get paid maybe 40k better than BCG digital ventures PM. As a former consultant I laughed at the pay difference (maybe 115k for more YOE than a C out of undergrad). Laughable as a former consultant.
In addition to lower pay, it’s also lower ownership over the work. You don’t really get to have your own vision — I felt like it was more implementation for the clients. Kind of cool that you’re going from 0 to 1 (concept to real product), but someone else is setting the terms and defining what they want which is less exciting than owning it yourself (but also less stressful).
