Sounds like a smart move to me. Where’s the betrayal?
I did this and highly recommend it. I made $95k as a full time employee in 2020. On target to earn $170k as a contractor in 2021.
The opportunity I heard about was from an external recruiter who places auditors in contract roles with multiple diff national firms

You don’t get benefits and you’re only in contract, firms probably like this because they only use you when they have work.

I think you are giving yourself too much credit. Attrition is expected in PA regardless of if you go to another PA firm or industry. Loyalty is out the door the past couple of years. Also, I’ve been laid off of Big 4 back in the day so maybe I have a different outlook.
Personally, if I was interviewing you for your next job, I would discount the time you spent as a contract auditor. Definitely wouldn’t consider it equivalent to the time spent in a Big 4. My impression would be that you either left because you were asked to or you were looking for a money grab. The latter is definitely not someone that I want working for me.

OP is asking about when they eventually go to Industry. I don’t think industry cares.
