What's the general thought on 'Network Engineers' in the tech industry. They are not certified engineers but can go through tough certification examinations for credentials. I was in an argument at work today about the need for network professionals and the technicality of their role and would like to ask the audience.

I'm a network engineer, and I specialize is VOIP, and video. I have a Mastters in Internet Engineering with a minor in Cyber Security, a Bachelors in Telecommunications engineering, a security+, a CCNP Collaboration, and other certifications. I've been in the industry for 25 years and I can explain and design (with the proper reference books of course) how to design circuits from basics all the way through radios, filters, and optical circuits.( That was the bachelor's degree). My masters degree involved network design, FCC legal requirements, and cyber security. For that degree I had to design an enterprise level system and defend my choices including budgeting, ROI, and user research. I spend almost $1500 a year to keep my knowledge, industry memberships, and various certificates up to date. My current position is a consulting engineer and I have designed, implemented, and completed massive DOD, corporate, and SLED migrations to the platforms I work on. I'm currently 70 percent through a project 20,000 user migration and have completed similar ones in the past. Not a certified engineer my foot. I may not be an EE, but my degrees aren't that much different.

AT&T at my college my program was identical to the EE program until the middle of my junior year and that is only because I chose to minor in digital vs satellite networking. I couldn't wrap my brain at the time around the differential equations class so I decided signal analysis and design was a bit beyond my ability and 1's and 0's had much less room for analog math 🤣. That's why I got so huffy. I do respect people who have a PE because that thing is hard! But a BSEE.. Yah. No.

For large scale radio access networks, it can get very technical and very niche. Very few people in the world actually understand 4G/5G and telecoms at the lowest level. I’ve only seen certified engineers and those who hold a masters within that realm. For computer networks I’m not as familiar but I’m sure it’s no easy feat maintaining, scaling, and securing what is essentially the backbone of the business.

A qualified network engineer has earned more knowledge than many an EE...

AFAIK, they are highly valued. I’m aware of network engineers in enterprise companies who are the only ones who know how to troubleshoot and maintain those networks, even as things transition to more cloud-based. As companies are more reliant on their network being reliable and constantly upgrading their cyber security, I’d say network engineers are more needed than ever. It takes active effort to be informed and stay informed, like E1 demonstrated, and I don’t see the value in that knowledge going away anytime soon. The lack of being a “certified engineer” is not surprising since certification groups can drag their feet in acknowledging anything software related as being engineering.

Daddy D is throwing around some pretty crazy referral bonuses right now. If I can hit four referrals, I’ll split evenly among all four + myself. Up to $10k per person and at least $2.5k per person. Put it in escrow and everything. So if you’re looking to change firms, a new opportunity, etc. DM me. Can easily negotiate a nice sign on bonus, and my offer should sweeten the pot.

Which approach do you usually take?
