Consulting

What’s the general view on Cognizant? The good, the bad? Is it considered a consulting company? Thinking of going from a typical consulting firm to there and interested in hearing how people view them

The good: “Consulting Lite” with a more causal ambiance than B4. Was a body shop but heavily investing in a repositioning as true competitor to ACN / Cap Gemini / KPMG tier 2 with tier 1 ambitions. Pivot still early but visible progress made. But still has Infosys-like rep in many places. Can make your mark a bit easier here than in B4 as consultant population smaller, especially at lower levels. Get in early on the pivot and you could ride it up to a much more profitable exit and jump a level in 2 years. The bad: immaturity of processes and historical compete on price approach hamstrings many strategic internal efforts to improve go to market approach. Your employee experience varies dramatically based upon what vertical and industry you are in. The ugly: Compensation is lower due to that historically cheapskate’s choice pricing. Maddening tendency to throw 60 people in India at a problem to build an internal solution rather than just spending the money to buy a proven tool. Insanely difficult to do simple things that are a mouse click at a B4 or MBB due to either convoluted or missing process. Way too much ability to get anything depends on your networking skills.

Agree with all of the above except pay if you are coming from big4. Cognizant will definitely give you a premium over what you are making now and can have a more competitive bonus structure.

I think many view it is a tech body shop similar to InfoSys or TCS

Death by change order, they will say yes to everything yet struggle to deliver with the right team. All the resources are in India, and they are in purely for a land grab. I have started to despise most Indian BPO companies as they are all unethical and are out to take American jobs away.

D1 Having worked at Deloitte for 7 years, may I suggest you start despising D as well? I have also hired Deloitte when I was in industry and just guess how many CRs I had to deal with. We all freaking hire college students and make it up as we go along - welcome to consulting. RE: BPO Region 10 as it was called when I was at D does exactly what you are describing here. And not all of C’s resources are in India. If you are going to dispense sweeping observations maybe learn something first? Oh and BTW we can’t hire US based staff fast enough to meet demand - and that’s because we are creating jobs in US AND India. It’s been that way for 2 of the 3 years I’ve been here. Company has its warts but your analysis is not supported with facts.

If you can’t break into B4 or Accenture, go for it and see if you level up later on. Some will argue going the contractor route might be better though.

Compete based on price and offer body shop services. Like the other firms, they may be attempting to move up the value chain but the perception still remains.

I would echo what some others have said. Pay is not MBB level, obviously, but it's not bad either, especially considering I rarely work more than 45 hrs a week (regardless of project). However, leaders in consulting are primarily former IT engineers who moved up and don't know what "real" management consulting is. Projects in my experience are not very interesting and there is little opportunity to be creative or contribute much thought of your own. Clients just don't go to Cognizant often for that kind of work. And that's on what Cognizant calls "management consulting" projects, which are only about 10-20% of projects I would estimate. If you are smart and hard working, it's easy to stand out, but that won't necessarily get you anything, other than more projects with people you have performed for. There are no offices, which allows you to live anywhere with an airport, but doesn't do much for culture/network. Internal resources/ processes/communications are generally pretty bad. In summary: it's an IT outsourcing company that has a consulting practice in order to sell more IT services. It's not a consulting company first. If you like requirements gathering, IT implementation, RPA, etc, it's a pretty good place to be. Comp is actually very competitive if you look at hourly rate. Benefits are pretty bad. Internal systems/organization are bad. If you think there's a an easy way to find out X, you're wrong. Your manager/director/VP will try to find out X for you and eventually you will get two conflicting answers that are both wrong. For me, I feel I don't have room to grow except to learn to do things I'm not interested in.

Curious, US Audit: what % of your team is actually in India? If not India what country does your firm outsource from? 70% of the people on my team are in India.

Could someone illustrate with a simple example of how partnerships work in a consulting firm? I’m trying to understand and I think for a Partner end of the day projects become his business. How does the Partner make money and how is revenue shared between the firm and the group of partners. Also someone once told me consulting is a multi level marketing scheme - is that how it works?
