There’s also the personal factors of how much you want to give up. If you plan on staying single, it’s easier. If you want a family, you’ll need a SO who is willing to take a step back and take care of things at home the majority of the time. What you want 10 years from now may not be what you want now. Just something to think about. For the most part it’s the family of rich people who get the most benefit. Don’t forget to carve out some of that enjoyment for yourself as well.
Risk adjusted wise, MBB/T2 and PE are your best bets, but just be ready to give your life in return
Great perspective
Tier 1 consulting. 100%.
This percentage seems to be dependent on getting into T1 and not being counseled out for 10+years. (I.e. survivorship bias)
Even tier 2 consulting you won't be way off depending on how quickly you progress. Maybe $800Kish @12 years if you get promoted at maximum pace (but that's rare). You will never touch tier 1 comp but you won't be poor.
Edit: to the point below if comp is all you want IB, HF and PE are your best bets.
Is it better to switch from big 4 to tier 1 or just stay in big 4 and work your way up to a high salary ? Or would so many other factors apply such as what you do? Like advisory but not in strategy but in project management ?
PE, IB and consulting can all get you there (in descending order of likelihood). Tech / startups can get you a big payday but likely not the annual comp.
Here’s my guess: 30% of m7 grads have a shot at this, then maybe 5% of that cohort gets there in 10 years with an incremental 5% of the cohort getting there every five years capping at 25-30% getting you to ~10% of the initial pool of that year’s m7 class by the time they’re all 50.
I suspect the majority never crack 700/year.
What about at a big 4? Doing project delivery PMO work?
Big four partners make a great living and the pensions are great.
