What’s the longest commute you could tolerate? I’ve never had a commute unless you count an internship 7 years ago for two months. I live close to city and I’m looking for new job but to really jump in salary and opportunities I have to look in the city.

30 minutes one way

like

if you have a 48 min one way commute, in one week you spend 8 hours commuting. thats a “full” working day and I would never :)

like

The only commute I will tolerate is to my kitchen

funny

7 hrs to a client on Monday, 7 hrs home on Thursday. 30 minutes each way each day hotel/client site…. So 17 commute hours a week? Just for 4 months though. My commute is currently 4 seconds.

15 minutes

like

2 hours one way. Walk to train, ferry, another train and then walk to the office. Still in the city though Staten Island to Manhattan. If I took the express bus can be anywhere from 2 hours plus. One Friday it took me 3 hours and 30 mins to travel 32 miles. The max IMO should be 30 min one way. Anything more is time wasted

like

1:30 drive one way. Only 2x a week but it was brutal

Big difference driving vs anything else. Over 45 min gets to be a real time suck either way though.

I had a long commute (45’+) in Europe but it’d be sitting on a train so I just read and didn’t mind it that much

I did an hour drive each way for 3 years and it honestly wasn’t bad since there was no traffic (very rural). In traffic my max would be 30min. Totally different experience. I’m not a city dweller so no opinion on with mass transit.

1.5 hrs to a client 3 days a week. Walk-local train-bus, eventually got them to put for Amtrak-Uber. It was rough

20 minute walk from the workplace - having to drive and pay for parking or use public transit is just 🤮 The time saved is easily worth the premium to live downtown

I used to commute about 1:45 each way on the LIRR and still have PTSD from it. Every time I hear belt buckles clinking together on an airplane it sounds like the hole puncher the conductors use to take tickets on the train and I have a mild panic attack looking for my ticket 😩

Now that I have a baby, maybe 20 mins each way. It seems hellish to spend all day at work and lose any time with my son that he is awake. Also, I have never commuted since he was born (pandemic obvi), so I have less tolerance toward the idea.

I did 50 minutes each way with no traffic. Because it was at the beach, it could be two hours one way during the summers on Fridays. I really resented my spouse for that. That was almost two hours a day that I was in the car, which ultimately hurt our relationship because it was wasted time that I couldn’t spend with him or doing work or anything else. He was the one that decided that we should live so far away…

Ugh, im about an hour away and less with traffic. I know I would hate it after a week but I wanted confirmation. So I guess I’ll stay where I am *sigh*

In the before times my commute was 25 minutes on the subway (2 express train stops). 18 if the train arrived right as I hit the platform and had a quick stop at the midpoint stop. Wouldn’t mind a bit longer on a train (say up to 45 minutes), but the idea of sitting in a car for an hour+ each way gives me hives just thinking about it.

So today I was promoted to senior associate after just over 5 years at the firm. But I still want to leave. So my question is this - how many months should I stay for the guilt (explained below) to fade away before I leave? Guilt - the firm allowed me to work remotely in another country as I pursue a postgraduate degree. There are better opportunities in this country and the salary I would get as a starting salary here can never be matched by the firm.

What is the bonus structure at your law firm? Associate hour requirement at my firm is 1850, for every hour over that you get your billable rate (i.e. if your rate is $200/hr you get $200 for each hour over 1850). To me this seems like its just overtime pay. Is this typical?

I recently moved to Sweden to work as a consultant. But I'm facing problems with all documents issuing processes, that take too long, and without all the documents I can't open a bank account to receive my salary. I'm starting to freak out about this. It seems it's a common situation for foreigners but most consultant companies don't do much for help us - I know some people that only received their salaries after 3 months. As I'm too stressed about it, I can't sleep well and focus at work...
