We have had ~11 year associates make partner. Very good associates, everyone considered obvious partner material.
I strongly disagree with 9-10 being a red flag in biglaw. A very typical timeline these days. The more interesting info would be whether they’re partner soon thereafter or gone.

That’s not a red flag at all. Don’t be fooled into thinking that making “partner” after 6-8 years is a good thing. That’s often a trap (in more ways than one).

Yep. I’m a 7th year and would rather be dead than partner right now lol.
Back when it was common to get to equity partner around this range, yes, it would be a red flag if you didn’t. Times have changed, though. If anything I’m way more suspicious of firms with “partners” at ~6 years (isn’t Kirkland one of these?)

It’s not uncommon for firms to have 9th and 10th year associates. Many firms are officially an 8 year track but in reality are 8-10 year tracks. I don’t think this is a red flag at all.
Most firms that don’t have associates beyond 8 years are not promoting all of their associates, but are more likely pushing them out. So having “older” associates is actually a good sign that they’re not pushing people out.

That recruiter is absolutely shooting from the hip with advice
Automatic 6th year non equity partner is a bigger side eye for me than a 10th year associate.
I remember seeing a fourteenth year associate at a big CA firm a couple years ago. My current firm has lateral associates in their 10-12th year of practice, but they took class cuts to join so they’re typically around 8-9th class year and on a clear partnership track.

Don't listen to this recruiter. 9-10 years is common, longer if you've lateraled and taken a class cut. Firms like Kirkland that make partners at 6-7 years aren't actually the norm.
I’m a 10th year by choice! I’m not interested in becoming partner because I want to spend more time with family than doing BD. And I’m not interested in being of counsel because I hear you have to negotiate your salary and justify your role etc. I’m senior enough to feel like I know what I’m doing and can delegate as I want. I’m hoping to be an associate for as long as possible!

There are lots of posts about Kirkland. It’s a marketing thing and helps their people go in house and be good clients. But people know it’s not a real partnership. Also causes big issues when lateraling to other firms, so smart of Kirkland to make it hard on their peeps to lateral. Most people do leave after 6-7 years.
To OP, being an associate as a 9th-10th year is very normal (said by an associate who is a 9th-10th year). Only red flag is that the recruiter doesn’t know what they are talking about.

Yep, a recruiter saying this is one I’d immediately dump. They do not know the market (or they’re BSing to push some other firm for selfish reasons)

Anyone know why Kirkland does the auto partner at six years?
A9 - I’m at Kirkland and you don’t automatically become partner after year 6. They’ll hold people back (ie have them repeat their 6th year) if they don’t think they’re ready to become an NSP.
