If your employer doesn’t offer Roth 401k what is there to balance? Difference is pre tax (401k) vs post tax (Roth) contributions. You can open a Roth IRA with a brokerage independent of your employer but it is not a Roth 401k. Highly suggest maxing out your Roth IRA contributions (6k) annually.

Adding to what PwC1 said, Traditional 401k or IRA accounts are taxed as income when you take distributions. Roth accounts are tax free income when you draw it down. So it’s a matter of when you pay tax on it and how much you think one will advantage you now vs. later.

New to investing, but want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. I've maxed out my 401K and am looking to open an IRA. I know everyone recommends backdooring this into a Roth IRA, but if my plan is to move/retire to a state with no state income tax, wouldn't traditional make more sense? Or am I overthinking this? Also, if I go the backdoor route, how do I make sure I don't get taxed again, when i convert to a Roth? Thanks in advance!

Seeking portfolio advice. 23 years old- 95k comp, 20k currently in market through the most basic Schwab index funds and Vanguard ETF’s, already max out 401k & IRA. My returns over the past year have been meager. I want to take on more risk and pick more concentrated investments. Whatever I go with, I want to hold them for the long run with no intention to sell. Any advice?
